Depending on the lender they may not i worked for Amex & they wouldnt accept you until the default was off your credit report which is approx 5yrs unless he wasnt meant to have it then he should contact the place who defaulted him to have it removed.
But i do know some places dont care but be careful about it because it may mean they will charge you a higher interest rate.

If you've paid your default you can request it be taken off your credit file by the company who put it on there. If not it will stay on your file and you'll have buckley's with credit agencies and banks (in same boat). I now use a broker, their interest if you get a good one are the same as a bank.
