Hi Ladies,

My 3 yr old is number 1 toilet trained but always asks for a nappy for no.2's. I have now told him their are no more poo nappies and he has to go to the toilet.

He has not gone since I told him this yesterday morning. He asks me for a nappy and I tell him I will take him to the toilet he just says he doesnt want to go anymore.

Am I going to cause him constipation or any other drama's if he continues to hold it in.

thanks for any advice

I think it depends how you both handle it. Have you tried sitting quietly and asking if he's maybe a bit afraid to poo without a nappy? If it's the sound if it dropping in the water you can put some loo paper in there first.

If he goes another day without I'd maybe make sure he's getting plenty of water etc so that when he finally goes it's not going to be firm enough to hurt him, cause otherwise you can get big problems happening with refusal because of the pain, and then holding on causes it to hurt more in the end (pardon the pun!).

My DS was exactly the same but would hold onto his no 2's for 3-4 days ! In the end we had to use rewards to get him near it and strongly encourage him...we also got a different seat for him as the one we had didn't fit properly and it would sometimes slip which I think freaked him out! So we chucked out our $30 wiggles seat and got a $2.50 seat which he happily uses !!

I was using a mix of disposables and cloth when O and J toilet trained. And do I wasn't wasting a disposable every single poo I told them, fine, they could have a nappy.... but it was going to be a cloth one (not even a modern cloth one.,.. a terry square) and I'd fold it so it was so bulky and uncomfortable that they wouldn't want to stay in it....

AND in addition to that, I got a ziplock bag for each of them, bought 2 hot wheels cars and put one car each in the ziplock bag.. then stuck it high on the wall in the toilet, over the top of a star chart. 3 poos in the toilet to get the car.

Worked a treat. ;)

OH... and every few days I'd fold the nappy smaller, so it would get harder and harder to put on,.... and then in the end I could say... You're just too big now!!

my mum said i used to get fishers as a kid (tears in my bum) i knew it was going to hurt so i would hold it in for days, its quite common for kids to do that..
anyway..
i was watching super nanny one day :p u could try puting a nappy open in a potty, and see if he will go in it.. if he does try that for a few days then put the nappy open in the toilet..??
i hope i can help..

DS was scared of doing poos in the toilet. I ended up having to semi-force it. I took the nappies off him- no more in the house.
At first, I would sit with him in the toilet (him on the toilet, me on the floor) and hold both of his hands. He would go and that would be the end of it. Once he got the hang of it, I would hold one hand than I would not hold any hands but still sit there. Than I would stand, than stand at the door, than just outside. Eventually we got there.
It also hurts him- pretty much every single time so he has prunes/prune juice and that helps.

thanks ladies,

for your advice, at least I now know it is a common problem but I will try some of your suggestions.

Unfortunately I have 2 other kids both in nappies so I cant get rid of them out of the house and he is not night trained so he has a sleep nappy which I am finding he is going in 1st thing in the morn before I can get it off him.

Thanks again
