I cant afford to spend $500 on a complete set of brand new branded cloth nappies, its just not going to happen. I'm currently only spending about $17 a week at Aldi on nappies, and so I get that even then cloth is cheaper because spending the absolute cheapest cheapest cheapest nappies possible, is still gonna cost bit over $800 a year.
But I just dont have hundreds of dollars to fork out upfront on a nappy collection.
I've been using terry towels, pins and plastics, but as my son get more active and doing bigger wees they're less and less user friendly (I'm nearly piercing his willy on a daily basis, I'm just waiting for something to go wrong here!!!)
While I'd love something fashionable and pretty, because I'm more likely to use something that is fun and a statement to use, I suppose ease to use, wash and dry is probably more important to me.
Has anyone bought from the cheap ebay brands? Or any other cheaper ones to look at? Also, any bought 2nd hand? Its certainly not my first choice, but I'm willing to explore it as an option.
second hand are great!! i've bought quite a few this way. In terms of ebay cheapies i have a couple of links of ok ones, i'll pm them to you :)

Wonderful!
Other than ebay, where else can you buy them 2nd hand? Because they didn't really have very many on ebay.

Ebay does not allow second hand nappies.
Buy 4 Baby is the one I use.
Others have mention Oztion and Monkeys Undies as other good options.

ok to start with how much do u think u will be able/ willing to pay to start out ??
id say check out the links em has sent to u ....no doubt she has sent the one to the "babycheeks " brand nappys ??....i looked at these and they are good value by the look of it !!!......(thats if ur able to spend $150 upfront)
so i guess my advice for u to start off with would be to get some "snappies" to uses instead of pins with your terry flats(this will stop the willy piercing:laughing:)u can get them at big w in a pack of 3 for $9
...and then invest in a few (say 3) good covers i sugest babybeehinds they are $12 each (you can ues these with your flats u already have )

I started out buying only second hand nappies from a forum - trying to buy at least one of all the most popular brands to see which ones we like the most. I spend any where between $10 - $30 (max) on a second hand nappy (depending on brand, design and age), but the thing with MCNs is at least you can RESELL them when you've finished with them or if you decide you dont like a particular fit. So although you may spend $20 on a nappy, you should still be able to sell it for about $10-15 depending on the condition. I've seen some people buy new nappies for $40 and sell them for $37  So it really works out waaaay cheaper in the long run. The other thing I did to 'economise' was to try and buy 2-3 different naps from the one seller to minimise postage - not much sense getting one nappy for $15 and paying $5 postage!
Oh - and another thing with MCNs - you only get what you pay for - some of the cheap (new) MCNs on Ebay only have flanellette as the absorbency, so you may as well stick with your terrys. Better off spending an extra $5-10 and getting a decent nappy up front.
Hope that helps.

i agree with kezza,
this is a fantastic special,
during the nappy hunt, spend over $100, get free postage and a free AIO nappy:thumbsup:
so, if you can get $100 together, they would be a great start!
you could get 7 (good quality) nappies for around $110
(double check, you may be able to layby the special??)
i quite like issy bears, they will fit through to toilet training, she is having 10% off at the moment too. they are $29 a hit, but you wouldn't have to spend the money on 'sized' options.
oh, baby safari have 'seconds' going for $10 each, i got some, a good nappy, fingers crossed mine isn't the one with the defect, LOL.

I think everyone has given you some great ideas for buying cheap nappies. Do beware of some of the ebay nappies - check what they are made of and try and go for bamboo as it is much more absorbent than cotton etc. Hemp is also good too.
The magicalls offer sounds fantastic they are a good nappy, I use them overnight with an extra booster and don't get any leaks.
As for the nappy pin dilemma - have you seen a Snappi? It's a little plastic Y shaped "thingy" with little teeth on the ends that grips the nappy. The work really well with terry flats - and you can pull the nappy tighter than you can with pins so it's a better fit. I actually have a couple that I no longer use and would be quite happy to send them to you - one is still unopened in its original packet. PM me your address if you are interested.
I was going to recommend starting with the BBH on sale. They are a really good nappy, and hard wearing.
I agree with you get what you pay for when it comes to MCN.
Oh you might want to consider drying time also, if you have ones that dry quickly you can get away with having less.
ie. bumgenius pockets at the moment will dry in about a day, and only a couple of hours if you get some good sun. Where as my BBH i have found can take about 3 days with the bad weather we have been having, and I haven't had one dry in less than a day. I often end up having to finish them off in the drier cos I'm scared they'll get stinky.
Like spottysocks says - the material quality is important and most of the ebay ones just don't have the absorbancy, some are just cotton. You get better value for money with prefolds/flats in good hemp or bamboo than MCNs in cheap cotton.
Can you sew? Another cheap was to start would be pockets - especially if you made your own boosters. Check out the DIY thread that was around here somewhere. With pockets you need much less of them because they dry quicker and you can have more inserts than outers to keep stocks up. With my 1yr old I could in theory get away with maybe 6 or 7 outers and about 10 to 15 inners. That would be washing every day and 5 or 6 changes a day.

I agree...I spoke to Patrick only this morning. He said that any discounts you get carry across to laybys...so if you have a great deal you can still layby it. They are so nice and friendly. Monkeys undies and buyforbaby to get good 2ndhand nappies. There's nothing wrong with second hand, but its even better if you can get brand new at good prices. Also don't forget to check out the discounts section of bubhub, they have discounts for nappy brands.
OSFM pockets are good too.
If you could get maybe 10-12 nappies to start and maybe wash every day or day and a half(ie one morning, then the next night) then you'll need less nappies and can slowly start to be able to afford more and more as you use disposables less. I agree with Trin007 about the postage too
