hi was wondering if someone can help me with a croup question. i have a 2half boy who gets croup quite often.
he got croup yesterday (saturday) and was given predimix at 4am. was told if we feel he needs it give it to him again at 4am (sunday)-the next day.
we gave it to him at 9pm, instead of 4am.
so instead of waiting 24hrs we gave it to him after 17hrs.is that harmful at all????
cheers-x;)

Hi, Hope your bubba is better now.

If you felt your DS needed it then I doubt it will cause problems. Just make sure the next dose is 24hours later. Get him reviewed if he doesn't improve. If he didn't settle after giving him the predimix after a few hours or sooner I would have taken him back to the hospital. Soemtiems bubba's need nebulisors to settle them before the predimix kicks in.

Generally they tell you to give it to them at the sametime each day to prevent overdosing which is quite easily to do. At the times that DS' dosage has been given at a inconveinant time we move it earlier or later by no more than a hour a day. If you do a google you will find more information about corticosteriods which is the group this drug belongs to

Here's a RCH Link (http://www.rch.org.au/kidsinfo/factsheets.cfm?doc_id=3719) for general info about croup

I wouldn't have given it 5 hours early, but what's done is done.

Predmix actually takes about 6 hours to work, so him appearing that he needed it sooner wouldn't have been alleviated by giving it earlier.

My 8YO DS still gets croup, and I distract him with an icy pole to alleviate some of the swelling in his throat, and I do give him ibuprofen for the same reason but strongly suggest you seek medical opinion about mising predmix and ibuprofen

Ibuprofen will NOT cure croup, but gives DS some fairly quick relief, and as he is now older we can often avoid needing steroids.

I'd give Nurse on Call or the equiv. in your state and get their opinion

thankyou everyone for your replies.....always good to see what other people have experienced and feel.
nothing happened after i gave my DS the predimix before the 24hr time. I too thought you could overdose but have never ben told this.
the following night (last night) he didnt need it.
now he is just sick with flu symptoms and full full of flem which wakes him at night. i am soooo tired-need sleep.
h has had croup many times before and it didnt phase me too much, until one time he went from being ok to needing the the adrenalin via amsk asap, we just made it to RCH-it was horrific.
I hate the word Croup... cheers all xx oo
