View Full Version : Nipple Creams
What sorta stuff are you meant to put on your nipples post feeding to stop them getting dry and cracked.
Is it Lanisoh? And if it is, is there an alternative to this because the price is astoundingly high!
What do others use and recommend? :)

Nikki i used Avent nipple cream.. it was great for pre-feeding, feeding, post feeding. Especially when your nipples are itchy, it takes the itch away. I highly recommend it

pawpaw ointment is a good one
Lansinoh is so good, I wouldn't bother with anything else. It's worth every cent. Just buy the small tube because you only need a tiny bit each time. I found it was one thing I didn't want to skimp on.
It's a bit hard to imagine what cracked nipples feel like if you've never had them, but trust me it is excrutiating. :fingerscrossed: you don't ever have to suffer with them.
The Lansinoh might be expensive, but I only ever had one tube and it lasted for the entire 'adjustment' period for establishing breastfeeding. IMO the expense was worth it - it was MAGIC stuff.
I used Lanisoh and found it to be great. It is expensive, but if you don't take any the hospital should give you some. Otherwise they usually have samples in those bounty bags.
While in hospital, one of the midwives told me to express milk after every feed and rub into your nipple. She said it is natures moisturiser. Doing this wasn't a help for me at this stage as my nipples were in a bad way. But after the soreness settled down, I did this and didn't have any problems after that!
Also, the midwives told me not to wash my nipples while in the shower. (Hard to avoid - I know) But they said your skin excretes natural oils which help to protect your nipples for breastfeeding.
My bubba is 10 months now and I am still feeding him. The initial hardship was definately worth it!
Good luck! :)
Lanisoh is great:thumbsup:
And you dont have to wash it off before feeding bubs. Also after every feed, rub your milk on nipples.Breastmilk is fantastic!!!
Good luck with it all, cracked nipples really suck!!!!!!!!

I used Lasinoh as a last resort (as recommended by a friend), but wish I had known about it from the beginning.
I probably spent as much trying other product's (that didn't work), so just go straight to the Lasinoh - it's worth it!
You've all convinced me!!
Thank you :)
Go the breast milk - its good and free
Cheers
Yep - I only ever used breast milk and had no dramas at all! Cheap and sterile and in plentiful abundance - lovely stuff!
Whilst in hspy all the middies and lactation consultants told me never to put anything other than BM on my nipples. Anything else can actually block the ducts. There are little lumps around the nipple that excrete oils to keep nipples nice during feeding. This is what they told me, I even had lanisol with me and they all said it is horrible stuff and caN block the ducts and lead to mastitis.
just saying what they said.
Hiya,
There is an exact alternative, and much cheaper at about $6 for 50gm jar. I've only seen it at Terry White Chemist. The label reads:
Gold Cross (brand)
Anhydrous Lanolin
Wool Fat BP
Contains: Wool Fat B.P.1g/g
50g
Don't think many people are aware it is the same. My aunty put me onto it pre-pregnancy to 'condition' my nipples before breastfeeding (didn't really make it any less painful on the nipples initially) but did alleviate the pain, itchy, cracking in those first few weeks  She used it over 20 years ago - and one of the few things she remembers as being a fantastic product. It's pure lanolin, so it doesn't need washing off prior to feeding, just like lanisoh.

The chemist lady told me about this today, she said the same thing - used to condition - but still pushed that Lanisoh is the best on the market.. I asked her if it's the same stuff and was 100% why would lanisoh be better than that and she was a bit iffy as to what I was asking...

I'll secong what Tracey said, all I ever used was straight old wool fat, anhydrous lanolin. Much cheaper, myriad uses (I used it to lanolise wool soakers, lol)
Re the Paw Paw ointment, many people do not realise that this is a petroleum based preparation, not really what you want on your precious boobies or in your babe's mouth.
Just BM.
And salt baths. I did it after every other feed in the first month and they never got more than tender.
Also, remember not to wash your nipple area with any soaps or body washes. Only use water. It strips the natural oils otherwise.

lanolin, lanolin, lanolin.
Tis great stuff - I had dry and flaky nipples before DD was even born - used it to condition my nipples prenatally for about 8 weeks once a day. Then used it for about 8 weeks after DD was born - couldn't have lived without it.
I bought 1 56g tube of Lansinoh - and it lasted me for that entire time. for the $20 it was quite cost effective - and if you can get pure lanolin for $6 then go that! That's all that Lansinoh is anyway.

i never needed to use creams. i had both nipples grazed in the first few days and i just use to put a bit of breast milk on them and air dry.
go the breast milk. - its easy to use and free.
I worry that if I was to use the BM it would be ouchy to express after an ouchy feed.
I also have a dry patch on one of my nipples already - I've tried squeezing and rubbing some colostrum on it but it doesn't help (I know colostrum isn't BM, but it's all I got!) I also use coco-oil (palmers stuff) but doesn't seem to help :/
I find the ouch factor from feeding, with sore nipples and engorgement at present, is only ouchy at the very beginning. Once Hugh's settled in to feeding it's fine. So to express at the end isn't a problem.
Hey Seekrit, you haven't long to go!! I've been away for so long and only just catching up on everything and everyone. Good luck with it all, but you'll do well!

DD had massive problems latching on and turned my nipples to pulp!! It was awful!! The midwife said that they normally do not recommend nipple creams, but she strongly suggested I use one! I got the Lansinoh (which is the only one the midwife said she'd recommend) and found it to be quite good. With Lansinoh, you do not need to worry about removing it before a feed and I found it also helped to stop breastpads sticking with all the blood. (Sorry TMI!!)
You can buy the smaller tube of Lansinoh which should last you a fairly long time. You really only use a very small amount.
BTW, expressing BM after a feed doen't really hurt that much. Nowhere near as much as a voracious baby gnawing away!! lol But seriously, after a feed, I found my nipples were much more desensitised anyway. BM has great antibacterial properties & letting it dry on your nipples after every feed will help you avoid developing mastitis if you are unlucky enough to end up with cracked, bleeding nipples.
