View Full Version : New to MCN's
After a year I have finally convinced DH to go cloth. Part time at the moment, but if I make it easy for him then hopefully full time with DD (I've already told him we are going cloth for the next one full time)...
Anywho I just have a few questions...
- I know I can't use commercial nappy rash creams and can use paw paw which we already do, but what about powder (cornstarch)? I don't have a great deal of issues with NR other when she is teething & generally use powder when she has a little wet rash...
- Does anyone use MCN's for childcare? She goes three days a week & would love for her to be in cloth there as well.
- How do I know if they are done up correctly? I have just put the first one on and I hope it is not too tight
- She is a heavy night wetter. Any suggestions on what to get for this would be great.
We have started with BBH Magic alls but would love other suggestion & handy hints...
thanks everyone :D

Hi, im relatively new to cloth nappies too. I have been using them for about 2.5 months part time on 2 kids.
I havnt used NR creams with my kids when in MCN (i tend to put a sposie on after cos its usually at night after a bath) But from what i have read most people use a liner (or 2) in the nappy so that the cream doesnt come into contact with the nappy its self. If it does because it is a barrier cream, it will stop the nappy absorbing properly. Im sure that there are other people on here who can give u more info.
Each child care is different, and u will have to talk to your child care, and ask them what they do.
I found it hard to tell what was to tight at first. Have a look at her when u take the nappy off and if there are are red lines and marks around her tummy or legs it may be to tight. with my DS2 i have to do up the BBH Magic-all so that the snaps are uneven in order to get a good fit, but that doesn't affect the function of the nappy.
To overcome the heavy night wetting with my son (i use the BBH magic alls on my DS2) i put a pea-pod bamboo insert into it. I bought them from their site 4 for $20 and they are a massive bamboo insert is tri-folded (its basically tripple the size of the insert that the BBH magic alls come with. Otherwise you can invest in specific night nappies, there are a few threads about those, go for something bamboo at night IMO
My DP is not a massive MCN fan and thinks that i have been spending to much on them, but i pointed out that the only waste is when he doesnt put them on the kids!
for AIO and AI2 we like,
Itti Bitti D'lish
Bambooty easy dry
Good luck, it all gets much easier, but it does take a while to get it all sorted out.

I'd be interested to know this too? I never knew paw paw was ok to use! I have just ordered some microfleece to make liners, apparently you can use cream if you have a liner so it doesnt actually get to the nappy iykwim? What i've been doing in the meantime though is if noah has a bad rash I just lather him up in cream and use a sposie just for one nappy until he needs to be changed next. That usually helps. I also give him nappy free time in the morning and then after his bath at night.

I dont personally but I know theres a few girls here that do. I dont see why they couldnt use them!

I usually do them on the tightest setting I can get, you will know if it's too tight as it will leave yucky red marks on her or she will seem uncomfortable. I like them as tight as possible to contain everything well, but making sure he is comfy.
- She is a heavy night wetter. Any suggestions on what to get for this would be great.
We use bambooty night nappies which are brilliant. I have been using a bbh PUL cover over them too as they occassionally leak out the top. A lot of the girls on here will be able to recommend some great night nappies too.
We have started with BBH Magic alls but would love other suggestion & handy hints...
I find bbh quite bulky, If you want something trimmer try out some itti bitti's or some bambooty's. Or if you want some 'boutique' style nappies there are HEAPS of brands out there. I love baby bullfrogs! But just grab a couple of each different brand so you can figure out what you love. Also, the great nappy hunt starts in a couple of days so there will be lots of bargains around! HTH :)
thanks everyone :D

Welcome to the world of cloth!
Cornflour is ok to use.
I'm using cloth in family day care and my carer has been really great about it. She's never seen an MCN before but didn't hesitate. I think it depends entirely on the centre. Some actually refuse to deal with them, others use cloth anyway. They may not want to drop the solid bits out and just return to you as it comes off. I put liners in for care to make it easier for her to deal with. I've heard stories of them being thrown out like a 'sposie too.
The magicalls can be done pretty tight becasue they have a lot of stretch in the elastic. Its a bit if trial and error really.
I don't use cloth overnight yet, if you are starting part time i suggest you start with days only for a while until you figure out what suits you and your bub.
Try joining the nappy hunt starting this week - google the diaper decisions web site. There's a list of sponsor sites which will make a good research list.
Enjoy it!
Someone else correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure I read somewhere that the paw paw cream in the red jar/tube is no good for mcn's.
It's totally up to your daycare. We've just started looking around at a few for my DS & they all said no to mcn's :(
I have 2 heavy wetters, & my favs are fluffy bubs, abby gros, bundles of buns, twinkle lily, itti's on my 3 mth old, baby bullfrogs & beetlebums.
Welcome to a wonderful addiction :flowerz:

ok i just did a google and this ia what i found .....hope it helps:D
Barrier Creams / Petroleum based
e.g sudocream, Lucas paw paw (red tube)
use WITH liners
Rub in salves / Water based
e.g black tube that says "non petroleum based"
yellow tube "simmons" paw paw salve
hemp bottom butter
use WITHOUT Liners - the stuff just rubs into the skin and disapears. will not mess up your mcn.
I'm new to cloth nappies and have found that the Bubblebubs are fantastic day and night nappies. I have simply boosted them with a trifold bamboo and a microfibre and my very heavy wetters (15mths and 32mths) have been fine.
With the bum cream I have been told if you use liners it really shouldn't seep into the nappy so your fine to use it.
I also love Bitty D'lish on my 15mth old and find I can use all kinds of inner when my snap ins are still damp.
I love our BBH and they fit both my boys without any leeks.
Hate hate hate my peapods and only use them for morning time when I know the boys are going to do a poo - so they are only on for 1hr max. (So in my opinion don't waste any money ever buying these nappies)
mumcha I dont mind the peapods, what dont you like about them?
Peapods - I hated them too:no: Ugh they were my first MCN and I was so excited....they looked so cute and they leaked every time:( I could never work out why with that mammoth insert:confused:
I rarely need to use any creams.....the once or twice I have (usually after eating a red curry - me not DD:laughing:) I've just put a sposie on her for the next few hours. I have got a shaker of cornflour next to my nappies, but don't use it much. I personally wouldn't risk a cream on any of my good nappies - I've bought secondhand nappies which obviously had creams on them....not a good look:(
My favourite night nappy is Fluffy Bubs Dreams....I have a few others, but they never feel quite right. FB has a big, big trifold in its pocket and it's hardly even damp after 13 hours on DD....sometimes not wet at all, and she feeds all night. Fluffy Bubs has regular stockings and it's not too hard to score a night nappy. The Magicalls should do ok at night too though.....maybe just get yourself a good bamboo trifold to stuff in the pocket?
Oh you are so lucky being at the start of your buying!!! I've got too many nappies and really can't justify anymore. But I do so love buying them:o
Hi!
I use barriercreams with a liner and they work a treat.
DS is a big wetter and I have him in BBH Bamboo OSFAs overnight, he can be in one for 12 hours and not leak. He is in MagicAlls/Peapods/BBH Hemp Fitteds during the day. I think the Peapods are great, but I've heard they leak for bubs with skinny legs.
I just do them up as tight as comfortable for DS.
Some daycares support MCNs, some don't, I guess you just have to ask at yours!
Hi TLS.
Itti Bittis are my favourite! When I started out I tried eenie weenee's, bamboo prefolds and magicalls. I really liked all of these nappies. I then tried and fell in love with my itti snap ins. Purely because of how easy they are. I bought 6 extra snap in sets to save money. They have been really handy because the shells dry quick enough that I can snap in the spares. By the time I need to wash, the inserts are dry. I haven't tried any other inners like mumcha does. I hadn't even thought of it.
I would love to try other brands because there are many cute ones out there but I just really can't afford to..
Good luck with it.
Thanks everyone... really appreciate all the advice and tips...

hey
I dont use creams very much, but when I do, I put in a liner. I got some material from spotlight and made mine, only cost me a few $$ and a bit of time to cut the material.
Hopefully your daycare will be fine with using cloth, just ask them. I think once they realise its just as easy as a disposable they'll be fine about it.
Most newies to cloth worry about putting the nappy on too tight - if I can put one finger between the nappy and DD waist - then the nappy isnt too tight.
Just boost your nappies with a tri-fold bamboo booster for nights. I also use a cover - just in case I have any leaks - I hate waking to a wet bed! If you have a heavy wetter, you could always try double boosting. or perhaps a dedicated night nappy that is super absorbent.
cheers
