Hi All,

I have just been informed from DH that he was chatting to one of his work mates today and he told DH that to all families that recieve FTB (Family Tax Benefit) payments will be getting $500 per child in July as a one off payment.

This is the first i've heard about this, does anyone know if it's true or not ???

(Didn't know whether this was the right place to put the thread or not, sorry)

Yeah, this came in last year I think (or the year before?!) It is a payment of $600 per child regardless of FTB. It is paid in about September if you don't have to put a tax return in, or if you and/or your partner does, it is paid shortly after then. If that is the one you are asking about!!:thumbsup:

Yep I called about this the other day. If your partner works and you dont all you have to do is ring the family assistance office and let them know when your partner as lodged his/her tax return.

cool.. i thought it was a one off payment never to be seen again :laughing:

However, it depends on what your partner's tax result is if your family is on one income. If you have to pay taz back, bye bye $600.

Hi, I enquired about it today when getting a ref no for tax. You get it - it is Family Tax B and it is $620 per child and is estimated on the partner who earns the least. You must earn less than $21750 annually to get it - so that elaves most working mums without - as usual!

So what happens with one working parent only ?? Is it then determined how much the working parent gets ??

Chellegoth - i so hope that isn't the case.. It would be a huge disappointment if we had to pay tax back.. but i highly doubt that anyway. :fingerscrossed:

Yeah of only one partner is working or you are a single ma, then you qualify. Lucky for those :thumbsup:

We got it last year and I earned the least amount, and that was well over the $21,750 suggested, (well over by thousands).

I think if you get at least the basic amount of FTB you qualify.

Frazzled
04-07-2006, 21:07
Just what the centrelink rep told me on the phone today. We dont qualify for part a either so i dont know if that has something to do with it?

I get both FTB A and B paid fortnightly...that probably means I wouldn't get it then does it?

04-07-2006, 21:19
that would be cool..didn't expect that! I hate doing the tax return, can't believe it's that time again already! It'll probably be more complicated this time too with DD!

KarniF00l
04-07-2006, 21:23
It's really no different whether you have kids or not.. your DH/DP/DF only needs to submit a tax return.. i gather you're not working yourself borntobemummy if you receive FTB A and B.

I'm not working, but I stopped working in July last year, so still have to lodge for that one.

Th payments you are referring to are called the Family TAx Benefit Supplements.

These are income tested and are only payable/assessed AFTER reconciliation has finished (reconciliation=looking at what you were paid throughout the financial year against what yoou should have been paid based on your final annual income)

in 05/06-the FTB A supplement was approx $626 per child
the FTB B supplement was approx $305 (not per child)

in 06/07 the FTB A supplement is $646.05
the FTB B supplement is approx $300 again

the supplements will be used to offset against any debt that is raised under the family assistance act (FTB & CCB) including overpayments still outstanding from previous financial years.

Hope this helps:)

KarniF00l
04-07-2006, 21:37
ummm yeah sorta brizbabe.

I didn't know there was a seperate payment for A and B.

Once again, this is way too confusing.. maybe i should just ring them or wait and see whether we get it or not :laughing:

I know it can be confusing:eek:

what part exactly don't you understand (the part about being 2 parts?)

In the "old" days Part A would have been known as child endowment and it is paid based on combined income and is paid per child...

In the "old" days Part B would have been called "stay at home" allowance and it is paid based on the secondary (usually mum;)) earners income.

PM me if you want to and I'll try to clear this up for you so you aren't in the dark as much:hugs:

Ok no need to get cocky ;)

I just didnt know that there was a supplement for both A and B, geez. I won't ask next time :rolleyes:

Yes brizbabe is right, there is Part A supplement, so if you qualify for Part A FTB you will qualify for the supplement however it is used first to payback any overpayments.So if you under estimated your income and you find after you lodge your tax return/s that you owe money then the $645 per child comes off that debt to reduce it.
FTB Part B supplement is if you qualify for FTB Part B during the year, I think you can earn up to $20000 before it cuts out,you will receive the $300 supplement.
All in all if you have 3 kids,estimated correctly ,didn't work much, (you,not partner...joint income for 3 kids is still around $110 000)...don't quote me, just for arguments sake here...then you will receive around $2300 give or take.

Don't forget the threshold for FTB Part B is something like $6000,once you go over that and if you didn't change your estimate during the year, you may find yourself with a nice debt to repay:mad:

Sometimes I wonder if its worth getting nothing during the year and waiting for a lumpsum in July when Tax is done:thumbsup:

I was only trying to help get your head around the payments itself.

If anyone can help????

What I want to know is I have a 4 y/o who gets a baby bonus each year $500. And I am due to have a baby in a couple of weeks so do I still put my claim in for baby bonus or not as I will recieve the maternity allowance when new bubba is born.:confused::confused:
Do I keep claiming the baby bonus until dd is 5?

I believe that the maternity allowance took over the $500 baby bonus, so you wouldnt claim for the second child because you'll recieve the maternity allowance, but you'd still claim the $500 your entitled to for the first child...someone correct me if im wrong ofcourse

You can check your estimated income online if you set up an online centrelink account. It includes all earnings with the exception of the family assistance you recieve and other payments like maternity.

I have a question about estimated earnings: if you have some shares and you cash them in is this counted as earnings (I estimated counting the ones we cashed in just to be on the safe side)

I didn't think they had these anymore? I haven't got one for about 4-5yrs now.

We always over-estimate DH's income by $12000, so we get a nice big fat refund at the end of each financial year. Plus they have me down as receiving only the base payment of FTB part A (no idea why, I never told them to do that) so it gets fatter from them having to backpay me that as well.

DH is getting his tax return done on Monday, so hopefully I wont have to wait too long.

We do a similar thing angel_kisses9798 & I must say it amounts to a nice figure what with the bonus & backpay + tax return amount.

If you recieve a taxable income from centrelink, such as parenting payment, or newstart, then yeah, you get a group certificate. They say on their site, if you havent got it by then end of the third week in july, call them.

if you only get Family tax payments, no, you dont get a group certificate.

How much tax do I have to pay on a payment from Centrelink?

If your only income during the financial year is your taxable pension or allowance, there are tax offsets to ensure that you do not have to pay tax.

If you get a pension and you have other income below the income free area, you are also not liable for tax, except in very special circumstances. If you are affected by these circumstances, you will be told when you get Centrelink's PAYG Payment Summary - Individual Non-Business (formerly known as a group certificate).

Can I have tax withheld from my payment?

Centrelink can arrange for tax to be withheld from your fortnightly payments if you wish. The Australian Taxation Office can tell you how much tax should be withheld.

Do I get a statement of earnings or Payment Summary from Centrelink?

If you get a taxable payment, Centrelink will send you a Payment Summary at the end of the financial year.

You should allow until the end of the 3rd week of July to get your Payment Summary in the mail before requesting any replacements.

What payments from Centrelink are taxable?

All pensions, allowances and benefits are taxable except:

* ABSTUDY supplementary benefits
* ABSTUDY (if under 16)
* Assistance for Isolated Children
* Family Tax Benefit Part A and Family Tax Benefit Part B
* Carer Payment (adult) (if the carer is under Age Pension age and the person being cared for receives a non-taxable pension)
* Carer Payment (child) (if the carer is under Age Pension age and the person being cared for receives a non-taxable pension)
* Carer Allowance;
* Crisis Payment
* Disability Support Pension (if under Age Pension age)
* Disability Wage Supplement (if under Age Pension age)
* Double Orphan Pension
* Employment Entry Payment
* Fares Allowance
* Living Away From Home Allowance
* Maternity Payment
* Maternity Immunisation Allowance
* Mobility Allowance
* Pharmaceutical Allowance
* Pension Bonus Scheme
* Pension Loan Scheme
* Pensioner Education Supplement
* Rehabilitation Allowance
* Remote Area Allowance (offsets Zone Tax Rebate)
* Rent Assistance
* Student Financial Supplement Scheme (no longer available)
* Telephone Allowance
* Wife Pension for DSP wives (if both partners under Age Pension age)
* Youth Allowance (if under 16 and a student)
* Youth Disability Supplement.

How do I find out more?

For more information on how tax may affect your payment from Centrelink, contact your nearest Centrelink Customer Service Centre.

For personal taxation advice, contact the Australian Taxation Office.

It's lovely isn't it?? We get the tax return, the backpay, supplements and conveyancing allowance all at once. Last year we ended up with just under $10 000........which all got spent on bills, house stuff and kids clothes, plus a small holiday.
This years lot is already spent, biggest 2 being the credit card and a colourbond fence. But at least it's not being blown on ****.

Hi There everyone,

Just wanting to enquire more about the part B supplement. When did this come in? Cause i'm entitled to both part A and B, but didn't recieve the extra 300? Could this be because i only had Ethan since april last year? Cause i wan't entitled to the full 600 cause i didn't have him for the full financial year.

Kaileys Mum - If you are waiting for your group certificate to do your tax yourself, you can now download your income info straight from centrelink into e-tax and don't have to wait for group cert. I rang the tax department the other week to verify that i didn't have to wait for it.

Now just gotta wait for other half to get his so i can do tax returns. Can't wait, i loooove tax time!! :smiliedance:

The FTB part B supplement started 2yrs ago, you should have got a prorata amount last year, probably only $30 or so. It should be paid straight into your account this year after your DH/DP does his tax return.

Just re-read your post. I think the FTB part B is means tested, so if you were working, you may not be eligable. Someone else should be able to clarify this for you.

Hi Brodies mum,

After your tax return is reconciled the info gets sent to centrelink and they just automatically pay you, I didn't have to claim last year at all! I had contacted centrelink about it and they just told me that it would be paid to me with my tax cheque. I'm pretty sure that's what they said, just don't take my word for it incase it takes an extra couple of days.

Angel_kisses9798 - The only income i am claiming is my partnered parenting payment since it's the only taxable payment and my full time job is Ethan!! LOL

I don't receive any centrelink payments throughout the year, just claim it when I send in my tax form.

I do DH's tax, and I also complete a return for me, then voila! nice little (or big) surprise 2 weeks later. This way I never get a debt. This year DH gets a nice refund and in total we'll get over $8000.

Yippee!! Love tax time!

Kasey, in the 0405 tax year the FTB entitlement was only paid for period 01/01/05-30/06/05 and it was $150 for the half year. You may have already earnt over the limit in the 04/05 year prior to having bubs and were'nt entitled to Part B. Give the FAO a call and check for yourself

cheers:)

You
