Sanity still rules in Australia, RACP publishes summary statement. RIC still not justified.
Summary here (http://racp.edu.au/download.cfm?DownloadFile=59AE2C7C-9F08-B344-21061157DF3636B9), full statement yet to come.
I read this a couple of days ago also.
These stood out to me:
The most important conditions where some benefit may result from circumcision are urinary tract infections, and in adults HIV infection and cancer of the penis. The frequency of these conditions, the level of protection offered by circumcision and complication rate of circumcision do not warrant a recommendation of universal circumcision for newborn and infant males in an Australian and New Zealand context.
The possibility that routine circumcision contravenes human rights has been raised because circumcision is performed on a minor for non-clinical reasons, and is potentially without net clinical benefit for the child.
One reasonable option is for routine circumcision to be delayed until males are old enough to make an informed choice.

If specialists are saying they don't support it, and it's hard to find a doctor who will do it, why do so many people still think it's ok to have their sons circ'd without medical reason

I don't think there can be that many people who agree with circumcision left since the rate is so incredibly low, it is literally being "bred" into non existance, and is only a matter of time until it only exists due to medical need.
I think although it's a small number, those who have chosen an unnecessary procedure for their infant son are far more invested in justifying it as a valid choice to make on their sons behalf even against the advice of professionals... because they have already made it..
My mind boggles as to why you would go forward with a procedure knowing that most doctors not only recommend against it, public hospitals refuse to perform due to "legal reasons".(alarm bells). and most private refuse to even do it? (siren)

I am so glad I read this thread!!! I was just reading the pro-circumcision and was thinking 'omg did I choose the right way for my 2 boys?' And now I once again know that I did! That is fantastic to hear that current research!! A lot of my friends have had their sons done because 'dad has his done'... My husband is circumcised and while I felt strongly about not getting our first son done I told my husband it was his decision on the proviso he read about why little boys get circumcised (perhaps a little manipulative because I knew what he would read and what his decision would be!!!). It wasn't even a discussion for our 2nd son!!
Thankyou for sharing this info!!! :yelclap:

A very positive step by the RACP.
And perhaps the first time they have acknowledged that the foreskin has any function.
