Does anyone know if the lines on home preg tests should get stronger as your HCG goes up?

Or if HCG tends to stay in your system for more than a week after a very early miscarriage, say at 4-5 weeks?

A bit of history (more like an essay I know, lol)...

I tested 8 days ago on Friday 21st (admittedly a few days earlier than I should have) with a Crystal Clear preg test and at first I thought the second line was blank, but after 2 mins then it seemed as if there was the faintest of faint lines in the little window - not even coloured really just a ghost of a line if I held it up to the light. I decided my eyes were playing tricks on me, and promptly forgot all about it as my AF seemed to start spotting on Saturday and got heavier Sunday. :no:

So, on Wednesday I was booked in for an x-ray and the nurse asked if I was preg, I told her about the test the previous Friday but that I was 99% sure "no" because of AF, she suggested I go to the pharmacy next door and do another test because she didn't want to risk the x-ray if there was any chance that I was.

Well the pharmacy had a Discover preg test on the shelf so I bought it and got :bfp:! The second was much fainter than the first, but it was definitely a line. :)

Even so I'm a bit hesitant by now, wasn't I having my AF? Is it an early miscarriage? Is it heavy implantation spotting (is that even possible)?

Called my GP and explained I assumed I was having AF but realised it didn't seem as heavy as usual, and now here is this test result. She suggested I test again in two days to see if the HCG gets a much stronger or fainter line... I also realised later that day that AF (if it was that) had stopped, it ended up being only half the length of my usual one (I'm fairly regular so this was odd).

This Friday's test (with another Discover one) is still :bfp: but not a lot stronger than the previous one as far as I can tell, it's definitely thinner than the control line. Tested again this morning with a Crystal Clear test and it definitely shows a second line too, but also fainter than the first. :(

Arrrrrgh! Really hanging out for Monday now as my Dr will do a blood test. I'm trying not to get too excited or hung up about being preg or not, but it's really hard to concentrate or get any sleep as this is the first :bfp: I've ever had.

What do people think; should I be quietly optimistic or cautious?

When was AF due?

The most reliable test IMO is First Response. You can get them from Woolworths/Safeway. Are the tests you are using an early test of are they ones where you are meant to test after your period is late?

Good luck :fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed:

It's hard to compare when you are using different tests. The faintness of the line doesn't necessarily mean anything. The amount of fluid you drink can effect it as can the time of the day.

I'd say you should presume you are pregnant until you get a BT done.

Thanks for replying :)

AF was due July 24th at the latest.

Even trying to compare the same test I'm not sure if I should see a difference in the strength of the line after a few days. Trying to decide what amount of liquid is too much (or little?) is another thing altogether, would be nice if it was as easy as saying "drink x cups of water before bed and test in the morning", hehe.

Oh well, here's hoping a couple of blood tests will find my HCG going up even if the home ones don't...
