View Full Version : A question about being induced - how was your bub afterwards?
Ok just a question for those who have been induced...
When you were induced, when your bub was born...was he/she ok or did they need extra help with breathing/stimulation?
The reason I ask is....
When i was pg with DS i was induced at 40+2 due to PIH (pre-eclampsia) and i had a precipitate labour (2.5 hrs) which was made up of 55mins worth of contractions stage (not sure what stage of labour you call it sorry :o) and 1.5hrs of pushing as DS's head started to come out with his elbow up next to it - hence why it took longer to push out. Now when he was born, he was unresponsive, and had apgars of 1 at birth and then 7 at 5mins later...he got sent to special care so i missed out on skin to skin :(.
Since then i have had a stillborn bub - she was born at nearly 23 weeks gest with a lethal form of brittle bone disease.
Now, this pregnancy..will be my third labour. I have been told by the hospy dr's that they would prefer me to be induced at 39 weeks due to the precipitate labour with my DS, and i can expect another fast labour. I was told that the reason why my DS was unresponsive could have been due to the fact that it took so long to push him out?
My concern is, if i get induced with this bub i am terrified of something happening to her...like being unresponsive like DS (i dont have PIH this time) I am getting very nervous that something may happen to this bub, or even loose her after loosing DD last year. But i am also worried about getting stuck somewhere and bub coming out quick.
I am kinda leaning more towards being induced as they can monitor her and it being more 'controlled' but another part of me thinks if i get induced will that make her unresponsive like DS was?
So how was your bub after you got induced? was he/she ok and got skin to skin....or did your bub need stimulation to get breathing?
Thanks for your help.
Hi Mrsshe,
I was induced with DD at 39 weeks & had skin to skin straight away, she needed no help breathing, Agpar of 9.
Makes sense what doc is saying about pushing for so long I guess.
I am due again in Jan & will be induced again at 39 weeks.
I am sure all will be fine for you and your new bubba.
Good Luck :)

My DD was induced at 40+10 days. My labour was 2 hours and 45 mins and my pushing stage was very short. Bub was fine when she came out and was placed straight on my chest and did not need help breathing at all.
hi,
i was induced at 40 weeks+10 days
i was in labour all day... the pushing period was about 1 hour i think... (my memory is hazy as i heamorraged afterwards)
dd was alright though... she had to have oxygen and her airways cleared out for a bit after she wqas born... but that wask because she has wrapped the cord around her neck twice before i was induced...
she was cleaned and i was seen to.. and then i got to hol and cuddle her and feed her... but it wasnt for like 2 hours until i got to hold her... not beacuse she wasnt ok... it was because they had trouble with me...
goodluck!! i hope everything goes well for you!!!
btw... dd's apgars were perferct!!!

2 out of my 3 were induced and we had no dramas in regards to the inducement. I had peth with DS1 and that cause both of us to have breathing issues. Nothing related to the actual inducement at all.
thanks so much everyone...i was just wondering if the reason why he was unresponsive was due to being induced, ive heard that being induced can speed things up a lil more.
I guess in my case the reason was because he got a lil stuck.

I was induced with DD2 at 39w 5d & when she was born she did not make a sound for a few minutes they took her out to clear her airways but brough her back within 5 minutes, her Agpar at 1 minute though was 7 & 5 minutes was 9.
After about 6 hours of contractions all over the place the dr said he was going to do a c-section due to her heart rate dropping. At that exact moment I said I wanted to move (I had an epi so was not moving about). I rolled to the left side & at that moment I said I needed to push. I went from 6cm to deliverying her in 23 minutes.
She was put on my chest then & we attempted feeding at that time but to no avail:(.
I do worry that her being a bit unresponsive & her feeding issues were due to being induced but always thought it was just me being nonsensical.:o
how were you induced 2girls1boy? did they use the drip or prostins gel?
I was induced with the gel but ive heard that the drip is alot more intense resulting in a higher risk of c/s
Last week i had a breastfeeding class on at the hospy and the showed a dvd on a study that was done about skin to skin contact asap after birth in relation to the bub feeding and good attatchment. It showed that all babies that had skin to skin asap after birth and left there for 1 hour, attatched to the breast and fed well as opposed to the bubs that were unresponsive and/or taken away after birth - those bubs did not attatch properly and took alot of work to establish breastfeeding.
My son spent his first night in special care due to being unresponsive and i missed out on the skin to skin....i found it really hard to establish b/f with him and had shocking attatchment problems.
Im not saying it WAS due to being induced or not, or being the fact he may have been in distress due to getting stuck or just sheer bad attatchment. Food for thought tho.
I was induced at 40+4 with the gel and then had my waters broken. I had a relatively quick labour, think it was recorded as 6 hours, with just 30mins of pushing.
DS was delivered up onto me, so we had skin to skin contact. He got a 9 in his apgar and had no problems.

Mrshe I was induced at 42 weeks - although all I needed was the gel as that sent me into labour.
I also had a long pushing phase (about 1hr 45 i think) and my DD was perfect apgars of 8 and 9.
If your this worried talk to your doc about your concerns and get them to explain all the dangers as well as the reasons they are recommending it!
No two babies/labours/mums are the same so although others may have had excellent inductions your body/baby etc might not like it and Doc can expain all the possibilities to you!!

I was induced with DS1 ARM induction and I had a lot of Breastfeeding issues for the first 9 weeks. Here is a table regarding induction/intervention http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?t=276434&highlight=Cascade . Personally if you were aiming for a lower risk birth and high breastfeeding probabilities I would go into labour naturally, your body will have a higher chance of birthing your baby optimally.
DD was induced and she was perfect after birth. Had a 9 Apgar score, and breastfed right away with skin to skin as soon as she born.
Breastfeeding went well, and yeah, I don't see being induced affected her at all.

DD2 induced by ARM at 37+5 due to pre-eclampsia... 2hr8min from first contraction... apgar 7 + 9... they did take her after 5min to make sure her airways were clear (had a paed in the room, so she wasn't out of my sight), then all good from there.

Jasper ended up stressed because I was induced and laboured for too long (oh and he was breech BTW :banghead:)
He did a massive poop inside me to alert the midwives that he was unimpressed with my labour.
We didn't get skin to skin immediately because they had to take him away to check him over and I needed to get stitched up after my c-section.
Though he was absolutely responsive and screaming his wonderful little lungs out the moment he was out of my body. He was wide awake and looking around for the whole time he was away from me and then had a feed as soon as we were back together (maybe 40 minutes after he was born), latched easily despite me feeling like a beached whale unable to roll or move because of the epi and the pain.
The midwives and my mum commented a lot on how allert he was and how present he was compared to what you'd expect from a newborn. When he woke from his first nap he was wide wide eyes looking around.
He's always been very very interested in the world around him and that starts from the moment he was born.
Congratulations and Good luck with your bubba! I dont think I'd want to be induced again because I just found the whole experience horrendous on my body, but there wasn't any visible impact on bubba aside from him pooping (THANKFULLY otherwise they'd not have noticed he was breech until he was on his way out... thank you thank you thank you bubba for saving mumma from all that pain!!!!!!)
I was induced at 40+10 and he was born at 40+11.
During the labour, (he was monitored the whole labour) his heart rate dropped a few times.
But he was fine when he came out. Apgar score of 9. He went on my chest straight away, but he wouldn't attach to my breast for over 2 days, but that could have been the epidural.
In saying that, I would never have a non-medically necessary induction again, as my body wasn't ready to labour and I believe that led to more interventions.
But your situation is obviously different. Good luck with your baby.:)

I was induced last month with my first 5 days over. In hindsight I wish I hadn't. I am not against the idea of medical intervention but I think in my case my bub was not ready to arrive and the whole process felt as though I was forcing her and my body to do something it wasn't ready to do. I may have needed to be induced at 10 days over and might have still not been ready though I guess I will never know. I am definitely waiting as long as possible on my next baby.
In saying that if I was already a few centimetres dilated upon being induced I would be more inclined to run with an induction. I was 0cm after 2 lots of gel and only 1cm after the third lot of gel when my waters were broken.
As for bub's response at birth- she was fine and unaware of the fact she was being pushed out against her will. It nearly got to the stage of emergency caesar but because she wasn't distressed I could keep going. She got 9 on the apgar and 10 shortly after when her lungs really let out a proper cry. I am not sure why your bub was unresponsive but I think they are all individual and just coz you had issues the first time won't mean you will again. I am sure everything will be good for you and I guess we need to trust medical professionals who have alot more experience with compilcations than we do. I wish you all the best and a happy, healthy bub :)

Your story sounds similar to mine. DD was induced at 36 weeks due to me having pre-eclampsia. Labour was 6 hours from start to finish. At 5cm dialated, I got the strongest urge to push and it was found that I had dialated a full 5cm in a few mins. This had a negative effect on my DD and she went into fetal distress, it was too late to do a c-section and I had an emergency ventous delivery, which was hell and very painful. After being induced and DD going into fetal distress her apgar score was 9 and then 10.
I was induced at 38w. I'd woken to find my waters had started leaking, my Ob then broke my forewaters & i was put on the drip.
Due to induced labour being more full on i had an epi, bubs was monitored & was fine. I was pushing for 90mins, her head wasn't getting over my cervex so she was then vonteused out.
DD came out screaming, was put on my chest right away but didn't latch on right away. Not sure of her actual APGAR score but she scored well & was put back onto my chest for more cuddles. She had her 1st feed couple hours later.
I was induced at 39 weeks with DS by AFM. Labour was 8 hours from waters breaking, 2 hours of pushing:dizzy:. DS was absolutely fine - alert, latched on immediately and was an incredibly content baby who thrived from the word go.
I have had a much tougher time with DD who came all on her own and was pushed out in 3 contractions!!!

Wow - that is a big call from that dvd!
I was induced with my son and he spent ages on my chest when he was first born. He ended up going to the nursery for monitoring because his blood sugar was just a tad low.
Even though he had immediate and prolonged contact (he stayed on me while I got stitched erc) he still was a lazy sucker (had to be pushed to suck) and I had such shocking issues feeding him - I lasted one week!
I'm going to try again with this bub, but I don't agree that the hour after birth is the be all and end all of breastfeeding. A lot has to do with your child's personality and also how badly you want it (I evidentially didn't want it badly enough :))

I was induced at 37+2weeks due to DD having a birth defect.. I had a 1 and a half labour and DD was breathing normally and had an apgra of 9 unforturatly no skin to skin here either.. We would have been able to go home 12hours later if it wasn't for her Defect..
