Hey not sure about nsw, but in qld they have changed how they put you on the waiting list. It actually goes on urgency and need. SO yo umight want to just double check that nsw housing hasnt changed aswell.
As for cheaper furniture try to salvation army. Or scout garage sales. You can get some great bargains, second hand stores might do layby too.

Just another thing, try not do the rent to buy furniture. You end up paying so much more than a new item would cost.
MIL did that with a washing machine and fridge and omg the amount she paid for a tiny fridge and a twin tub washing machine was outlandish. She could of went out and bought top of the range fairly big fridge and a huge washing machine top loader or a cheaper front loader.

NSW housing is still a wait your turn basis unlike QLD. NSW does have priority housing.. you could try and apply for it. Chances are you would be deemed ineligible unfortunately.

Have you contacted the community housing organsiations in your area? Department of housing should be able to provide you with a list of numbers if you don't already have them.

Have you got supported accommodation providers in your area?

Other then that i suggest you apply for as many rental properties as possible.. keep a list of them all. If you can prove something like 30 rejections a month for a few months you should be able to get on the list for priority housing. You never know you might stumble across a half decent landlord willing to give you a go.

Also going and staying in a hostel can help getting you into Department of housing sooner.
