View Full Version : Hip-carrying... are you a lefty or a righty?

This is a simple fun poll to see which side of our body more of us use to carry our children.... the left hip or the right hip?
For instance, a personal quirk of mine is that I am right handed but I can only carry my handbag (or children) on my left shoulder. If I try to carry the handbag or my child on my right side (hip or shoulder!), it just doesn't work. They both slip off!
But what about you? How do you manage... or do you suffer from the same issue as I do?
I am RIGHT-handed :: and carry children on my LEFT hip
right handed, right carrier but usually switch to left hip when she gets too much.
Strangely, I carry my backpack or handbag always on my left arm

I carried bub so consistantly on my left arm that he ended up with a dint in his head the same shape as where he rested his head on my arm when I cradled him by the time he was 8 weeks old
Woops...
The nurse pointed it out because its not the same as a flat spot where a baby sleeps (but he was favouring that side for sleeping also, so that didn't help) but his skull curved in slightly!!! I was horrorfied, but the nurse assured me that it happens and it will correct itself in time.
He's still got a slightly irregular head shape, but not terribly, and once he grows some hair it'll be completely unnoticable.
But... yeah... oops... I'd never ever ever have thought that could happen.
* and even knowing that I was always cradling him in my left arm to rock him to sleep, remembering and then awkwardly trying to cradle him on my right arm - and it was so awkward and uncomfortable for the both of us I'd switch him back - at the time an irregular head shape didn't take priority over the need for sleep in the middle of the night!!!!!!
A definatly lefty here - I cant beleive how awkward it is to carry on the right side!

Right handed
Kids on left side
Handbag on right side.
I had never thought about the handbag one before... interesting... why does it feel whack to put my handbag on my left shoulder but that's the only side comfortable to hold a child.... weird!

Right handed, right carrier......for babies adn handbags! But I'll happily swap bub over if I need to do something or she's getting too heavy. Handbag just CANNOT go on my left shoulder, just wrong!

I don't carry my kids on my hip. I think it would be painful for the child, especially for a little boy  I carry my kids in front of me, side on, with their legs together :)

I am right handed and carry DD on my right hip - it is very awkward on the left but i try to sometimes just to change it up or often i carry her on the front of my body (less stress on my back).
I have scoliosis and i bend in towards the left so have a nice curve on my right hip to fit bub whereas the left is straight - if that makes sense?
Handbag is always on the right also - left feels weird.

I am right handed and carry on my left hip. I started focusing on it today to see and it was basically always on my left side. LOL!
Although, I carry my handbag on my right shoulder!
This is quite interesting!

Both when I'm carrying the twins  but if I only have the one it's left side so I can use my right hand ;)

I'm right handed & always carry DS on my left hip & my handbag on my left shoulder (probably so that I can use my right hand to rummage through it & find things).
I use my right hand/ear when I talk on the phone...but that's a whole new topic :).
While Pregnant I've been carrying DS mostly at the front with his legs straddled either side of my huge belly!

I am RIGHT-handed :: and carry children on my LEFT hip
there wasn't a different option for me. i can write with both hands and i had to pick that one as i do tend to favour my right hand when writing tho.

I'm always carrying the kids on my left hip. On the right just does'nt feel right.
I'm right handed.
I also carry my handbag on my left shoulder too.
I write left handed but do a lot of things right handed and find it easy to carry my babe on any hip. I do tend to have prefference to my left but when I get tired I have no problems switching.
what ever side is free is the side for me
Generally ill swap if i need to write/signature is required but on the whole i dont favour one side over another, might have nappy bag on one side therefore bubs is carried on the other to ballance things out etc
What interesting poll results...
I am right-handed and carry on my right hip. Actually, my whole left side is pretty useless:laughing:. I am a dance teacher and can do everything with better precision on the right - kick higher, can only do splits on the right, turning, spinning etc etc. I just figured that 'righties' would do most things on the right and 'lefties' on the left...but the poll proves otherwise!
I am RIGHT-handed :: and carry children on my LEFT hip :)

I'm right handed and carry on the left side. That way I can still do paperwork and other things without any hassles.

I carry on left hip and right handed.
When my arm is numb I switch to right hip but only lasts a few minutes until I change her back to left hip.
I even attach her to left hip using the sling when I'm hanging out washing or doing housework
