My bub used to have a rythmn. He's 5 months old, exclusively breastfed....

He used to be up for an hour and a half, sleep for an hour and a half. Half way through his sleep, he would often wake, have a whinge, go back to sleep.

Now he often wakes up, and doesn't go back to sleep. Sometimes he grizzles, sometimes he talks to himself then ends up grizzling then crying. Means he only gets 45 mins of sleep, and doing this sometimes twice a day means he sips behind on sleep.

What would you do? Get him up, or leave him to grizzle until its time to get up?

I might cop a bit of slack for this but i would let him have a bit of a grizzle. Not a full on cry or anything but enough to give him a chance at being able to try to settle himself back down to sleep.
Sounds like he's waking up during his sleep cycle and cant get back to sleep so try some settling techniques and see how you go.
Good Luck:D

Geez Red Apple - 45 mins at 5 months - I wouldn't complain about that. Most of the bubs in the Oct 2005 section didn't sleep at regular intervals during the day.

My son was a great cap napper - I didn't mind too much if he was happy when he woke. If he was happy than I would gladly have gotten him out of the cot. I took it that he didn't really need a big sleep. Some days he might have had an hour at one time - that was great - but it wasn't always. But he slept really well during the night - so the day sleeps didn't bother me at all.

Just remember that he is getting older - so he will require less sleep as you go on. If you need him to sleep longer - during the wakeful periods you may need to tire him out more.

I probably sound like a broken record, but do you think he is having a growth spurt? My son was similar for 3 weeks from 5 mths old, he had his growth spurt and has gone back to his normal sleeping patterns, which is a nap between 8.30-11, 1-3 then 4.45-5.15. (I know I am lucky!)

At the time I thought he might need solids but he settled back down again before I started the solids.

Hope it gets better soon!

I agree. I think he's growth spurting. He's starving whenever it's offered (the boob). He rolls his eyes back when feeding, like thinking "THANK GOD!"

Patience, Grasshopper, I'll have to tell myself. I feel like I never get a break. I'll just have to get over it. It won't be like this for ever.
