Hi
My DD is 8.5 months old and she can sit and play on the mat, but she is not interested in rolling, moving or laying down at all (tummy or back).
How do I get her to roll?
How do I get her to move?
How long can I leave her to scream about it?
Any ideas or similar experiences would help, thanks
Cheers Roxi
PS: DD has just finished 9 weeks being looked after during the day by grandparents while I did my teachers prac and I think she was carried around all day - and now she thinks she doesn't have to move

with her being carried around probably hasnt help you out at all. if you lay her down and she cries i feel it is alright to let them cry for a little bit other wise they get to used to being picked up every time they make a noise. When my DD cries i can tell the difference now between just a wingy cry coz she wants to be picked and to a cry when she has just had enough and needs to have a cuddle.
DD went through a stage of wanting to be held ALL the time and i couldnt get anything done as she always only wanted me, and with me being a first time mum i just hated hearing her getting upset at all,but i have now learnt that if you dont start putting them down for a bit, it is just going to get harder and harder on you. Now DD loves to sit and play.
With the rolling im not to sure coz my doc told me when DD was 4mths that she should be rolling but she done it at about 4.5mths, i guess they do it when they are ready, if you are worried see your GP??
My neice skiped rolling she just started crwaling and now is walking along furniture but still hasnt rolled

Hi, I dont think there is too much to worry about just yet. As you said you think DD was carried around all day. Give her time, I know its hard but maybe you could try rolling around with her and make it in to a game or something fun.

One of my foster daughters went through the same sort of thing. When she came to us at the age of 1 year 4 months all she did was lay there and wouldnt move and after a couple of weeks she was rolling all over the floor. We put it down to her not having the space to move so I would say it may be the same situation with you. Your DD didnt have the choice - her grandparents probably thought they were doing the right thing, unfortunately that wasnt really the case.

As I said give it a couple of weeks and I bet she will be right as rain :)

Hi there,
I wouldn't really worry about your bub not moving yet. My DD who is now 6yo didn't really roll at all and she didn't crawl until she was 9 months and wasn't walking until about 15 months.
I was a little worried to start with but my maternal child health nurse told me that it was nothing to worry about. She said not to worry if they are a bit behind with their gross motor skills (walking, crawling etc....) it's their fine motor skills that you need to worry about. (using their hands, picking things up etc.....)
All I can say is.................don't rush her, she will do it in her own time and welcome the peace whilst you have it. Once she is on the move, there will be nothing stopping her and you will wish she was just a lump on the floor again. LOL

hi there....my daughter is 7 months old, and has never rolled over, she prefers to sit up...if i lay her down she strains to sit up,(which makes quite a funny face ) hehe, this happens on the change table as well...the midwife at the clinic said she might be a bum shuffle crawler, or she mat skip crawling all together and just get up and walk, we will see, but im not worried bout it, nor should u....

I wouldn't worry either. My ds never rolled, just went straight to sitting then crawling. HAve you tried tummy time without a nappy, pants or sox?? Just might get her wriggling. Really helps them if their feet can grip the floor and they can really feel what's going on.

I was worried about this with DD2 a few months ago. Now all she does is roll (well, she's just started to commando crawl a bit too)! I was just starting to get worried (i think it was at about 7/8 months) that she was behind, but then all of a sudden she started moving! She never stops now, and sometimes i do wish i had a child who just lay there quietly! :D

I wouldn't start to worry just yet...it'll happen when it happens. :)

My DD is 9 months old and isn't crawling either and it doesn't bother me at all. I watch all the other babies at our mothers group crawling around and I'm exhausted just watching! I'm enjoying this "quiet" time while I can :D

Thx everyone
We've made progress, she is happier for longer periods onthe mat and she is starting to reach to get toys
She won't move but will stretch until she ends up falling on to her tummy, face first into the toy pile and crying :)
Just starting the house safety audit for things that need to be moved / locked - we are going to need lots of kiddy locks!
