Should a 6 month old be able to sit by himself?

My DS is just over 6 months and still not able to sit up by himself. I'm sure my DD was doing it by this age . I know girls apparently reach milestones earlier than boys but out of curiosity what about your bubs?

Hey there,

my son is nearly 8 months and he is only just sitting on his own in the last few weeks, but we still need to supervise him as he 'topples' over sometimes!

But i have def found that girls do things quicker as a generalisation. At my mothers group all the girls are up and crawling all over the place and all the boys just lie there like great big lumps!:laughing:

hi, my dd only started to sit at 7 or so mths and is still wobbly now

My DD is 7.5mths and still can't sit properly by herself, she either leans foward and plays with her feet or she topples sideways...the rest of the time she throws herself backwards and rolls onto her tummy :rolleyes: She has been crawling since the week before she was 7mths.

My DS also crawled before he learnt to sit, he crawled at 7.5mths...not too sure when he learnt to sit, a month or so after I think.

Don't worry, one day you'll realise he can sit, crawl, etc, and you'll wonder where that tiny baby has gone :)

Thanks everyone! My memory really has gone to mush since DD was a baby:confused: . I guess I've been feeling a bit guilty as I've been a bit slack and haven't done as much floor play with DS so have been a bit paranoid I've been hindering his development:eek: I think I just needed that reassurance!

I'm not sure what the norm for sitting is, but DS1 was sitting unassisted at 3mths, DD was 11mths and DS2 was about 5mths.

Prop him up in the laundry basket with a pillow and toss a few toys in. This will help him to strengthen his muscles and practice his balance.

DD was 9 months old when she sat unsupported. Even though that was "late" when she did start she could sit for long periods straight away, and get into a sitting position from her tummy straight away as well.
Dont' worry they all do it eventually ;)

The dude is 11 months and he only started sitting at about 9 months... even now I have to pop a cushion behind him.
