I know he is still way to young now, but at what age can you start using these?

Not sure about a duvet / quilt, but a pillow is generally not needed until they're old enough to ask for one (around 2 I think it is) and definitely never in a cot. I have a small quilt for DS in his cot, but it's tucked in firmly at the bottom and I place him low in the cot so he can't wriggle under it and smother himself.

Yep we were told when they asked for one is when its time to allow one iykwim.
With Boof that was when he went into his big boy bed at 2yrs ...
With G well I am a terrible mother :o I gave him a pillow around 15mths due to his reflux & some nites he uses it to prop himself otherwise he uses it to lay over to press against his tummy when he is bowel is playing up & its been a life saver ! He also has a small cot pillow we got from IKEA that he sleeps with & drags around the house along with his blankie as comforts lol.

DS got a full sized pillow (my old one that smelt like me) at 18 months when he could no longer co-sleep due to DD coming home from hospital. I dont feel like a bad mummy.
Grace has a cot doona in her bed, she is almost 17 months. its never been a problem, i think shes had it from about 13 months.
And when she sleeps with me (we part time co-sleep ~ she usually is in my bed in the early hours of the morning) she sleeps on a pillow.

Just checked the SIDS guidelines, and it's up to the age of 1 that there should be nothing in the cot such as pillows, toys, doonas etc.
Aside from SIDS, the issue with pillows is unless you get a really low/flat one, it can be bad for their necks as they sleep... putting it at an unnatural angle and causing problems with posture and development.
12 months old minimum. I had to search into this because I put my DD1 into a big girl bed around 13-14 months due to the fact we have a new edition coming and we wanted her well and truely settled in her new bed before bub arrived.
I spoke to my support worker who has done special training in child development etc.. And I showed her the sleep situation I had set up for DD and it was with a quilt and also a pillow and she said it should be fine, just not recommended to infants under the age of 12 months :) HTH
