I am currently 9weeks pregnant and have PCOS. My OB has told me to stop taking Metformin as I no longer need it. I have also been to see a dietician who says the complete opposite and that the metformin will help control the chances of miscarriage, gestational diabetes and my weight durig pregnancy. From what I have read also metformin is more benefit during pregnancy tha it is harm. Has anyone else continued to take metformin during pregnancy?

A very good question! I am on metformin but not pregnant yet and would really like to know too. I personally think it would be wise to stay on it for the reasons you listed, remember that you OB can't tell you what to do, in the end it is your choice to stay on it if there are no medical risks :)
I think maybe he/she is concerned because metformin isn't actually listed as a treatment for PSOC yet, its still only listed for diabeties treatment so although there has been rather indepth research into its assistance, it isn't fully "qualified" as a psoc treatment if you know what I mean. I guess your OB is just covering themselves.
Hey Gals,
I have just been put on Met and have read that it is not recommended when pregnant but also read that it can reduce m/c. I suppose as you were saying it is not a confirmed use for PCOS, so nothing has been published properly about it. My gyno/ob said he would take me off it when I fall pregnant as long as I stay on Elivit, which from my understanding can help prevent m/c also. So really I guess it is up to you. A hard call - maybe talk to your OB what you have heard and that you were thinking of staying on it. See what he says then, and if he really advises you against it then I would probably listen!
Hope this helps!
Good Luck with your pregnancy, hope you and bubs stay healthy.
Yep, I was told to stay on it for the first 12 weeks for the reasons you mentioned (mostly to prevent miscarriage). I don't know how happy your Ob is to discuss these things with you, but if you want you could say that you were told it is recommended, by a patient of Dr Mackenzie Talbot (of Melbourne) and Dr Kidson (of Sydney) as these men are pretty up to the minute in this area, and quite well known as far as I've heard.
And congratulations!!!!

I was on metformin for my diabetes before my pregnancy. My doctor said that it wasn't harmful to the baby as much, but I had to go on insulin because sugars are harder to control.
However I do know many women who I met while pregnant that took metformin during their first 12 weeks because of the m/c issue.
I am on metformin and clomid atm and gyno said I was to stop it when pregnant. Will it have an adverse affect if I dont ?
I was on Metformin for the first 12 weeks of my pregnancy and gave birth to twins, I too was seeing Dr Talbot (Melbourne). Studies have shown that Metformin can reduce your chances of miscarriage and gestational diabetes. Good luck. :smiliedance:
I was on Diabex 1000 twice a day. Once I found out I was pregnant, my specialist told me to come off it straight away. I just figured it was harmful to the baby. I have to have my GTT earlier then most (at 23 weeks) to be sure I don't need insulin, but other then that, I've been told to stay off it till after bubs is born and then ease back on to it again.

Hi girls,
I am seeing Dr kidson and he has recommended i continue taking it until at least 12 weeks. He has arranged a GTT for me at 11 weeks to see if going off the met is an option. I have continued taking it due to the m/c risk
