I am currently BF'ing my 8 1/2 wk DD and have a wheat and dairy intolerance. For the last few weeks she has been suffering something terrible with upset tummy’s, posset and wind. In spite of this she is gaining weight at a healthy rate. I have spoken to both the CHN and GP who advised that she is a "happy chucker" and that my food intolerances are not causing the problem. They have also said that this will pass in time...I AM NOT CONVINCED!!!

I know that I should eliminate these food types from my diet, but need to be sure that they are causing the problem before I do this, as I am worried about the lack of calcium that she will receive (other calcium sources such as nuts and vege do not tend to absorb as quickly).

I am also concerned about the other allergies that are present on both sides of her family. My younger sister was diagnosed with ADHD at 18mths which was triggered by allergies such as wheat, dairy, additives, preservatives, colouring, grass clippings, dog hair, dust...etc. My DH's was not BF'd as baby as he was allergic to BM and also cows milk, he was brought up on Soy. Also his family practically all suffer from asthma and eczema (which I know is linked to allergies) and his sister has a very severe allergy to peanuts.

I need to know is if there is anyone out there who has been in a similar situation. What did you do? If I eliminate these foods and take supplements, will they affect her via my milk? And is it too early to have her tested for allergies?

if you are dairy and wheat intolerant, why have you reverted to eating these foods?? making yourself ill is probably not the healthiest thing you could be doing for your daughter. in fact, you being ill is more than likely half the problem.

as for her lacking in calcium if you cut dairy......... that won't matter, she's drinking milk. yours. it's that simple. calcium, most multi vitamins or vitamin supplements are not harmful nor have much of an effect on breastmilk. the ones that are usually say so. so go back to your usual diet and she won't notice and you will feel a heck of alot better.

there is a possibility that your daughter may have inherited your dairy intolerance and yes you can get her checked for that. i would be wary of any doctor diagnosing a very small child with adhd or add or anything at all like that.

please bear in mind that if your daughter is gaining weight well, and the doctors say she is fine, and that it is very normal for very young babies to have wind and possett alot, you probably have nothing to worry about. :)

don't worry, all us new mums panic about all sorts of things. mine used to throw up what seemed like half a feed at every meal, but he's fine and normal now. if you really are very worried, your can always put her on soy formula.

CJB/JBVD thank you for your response. My intolerance to these foods does not upset my stomach, but rather goes through me IYKWIM (this was undiagnosed for several years), which is why I have continued to include them on a daily basis. My comment of ADHD was an example of what allergies my sister still has to deal with to this day...I was not suggesting that my child is in the same boat and has ADHD/ADD.

In regards to the calcium in my breastmilk...surely she obtains this from my diet?, as it is recommended that lactating women have at least 1200mg per day.

hey there chooky -

As for the calcium, the milk gets it from where ever it needs too, so if you dont have enough, it will absorb it from your bones...

oh p.s - Got stacks of nappies for you, Garrett grew too big too quick!
