I have about 10 of these nappies (just bought them over the past few weeks after trialling a couple) and something is not right. Don't get me wrong, for the price, they're great! But... twice while using them I've been wiping DS's butt and found what looks like a tiny bit of that gel crystal stuff you get in disposable nappies.
All I can think of is that either there's some of that stuff in the wipes I'm using (maybe to keep them moist?) or there's some in the Zappy Nappy inserts.
Has anyone else noticed this???

I dont know about those nappies never used them but huggies do the gel crystal thing to and there so $$$
Aldi have fantastic nappies that dont have the crystals cheaper as well.
Im sure that gel stuff carn't be good.
I've got one Zappy nappy (their a cotton fitted right?) tbh its my least favorite nappy as its not very absorbent. I have never found any gel crystals on DD, we use cloth wipes too, so maybe thats it? I often also pop a bamboo trifold into it so it lasts more than 2 wee's.
I will have a closer look at it when I get home for you.

Thanks Merla,
Yeah, they're the cloth fitted ones. They aren't too absorbent, but I chopped up a couple of our terry flats and use them for liners. For $14 each, I reckon they'll do *grin*. I tend to change him after every wee anyway, whether he's in cloth or MCN's so I'm not too worried about how much they absorb, as long as he's wearing a waterproof cover over it.
Those crystals really have me worried though... I go with the cloth so I'm not putting all that chemical crap on DS's bum all day long.

May I ask why?

I have 5 of them. They were the first MCN I ever bought and I hate them. I only ever use them between bath time and bed time (so probably about an hour max) and they only just last that long. But, I've never noticed crystals after using them.

Because I use cloth nappies to avoid the chemicals being on his bum 24/7, so I would be very disappointed ot find a cloth nappy with the crystals in it.
"Sodium Polyacrylate- Ever noticed little gel balls on your babies bottom after wearing a disposable nappy? Welcome to Sodium Polyacrylate - A Super Absorbent Polymer that turns urine into gel and can absorb 100 times its weight in liquid. This is a substance which was banned from use in tampons in 1985 due to its link with Toxic Shock Syndrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxic_shock_syndrome). Employees in factories producing Polyacrylate suffer from female organ damage, fatigue and weight loss. No long term studies have been conducted to assess the risks of 24/7 exposure to this compound on a babies vulnerable genitals.
Due to its extreme absorbency, this chemical has been found to draw moisture from the skin, causing severe nappy rash and bleeding of perineal and scrotal tissue. Sodium Polyacrylate is also lethal to cats when inhaled."

Be reassured, the Zappy Nappies do not contain any gelling crystals/chemicals. They are 100% cotton cloth only.
Using a booster pad with them works well, but, Merla, why would you leave a baby in a nappy for more than one wee? I wouldn't like sitting around with a damp bot, would you?
Please, Mums, if you want to raise low-chemical kids, use a damp cloth, with or without a gentle soap, to wipe bub's bot, not a chemical-laden, expensive "wipe" you have to buy! Better for the bottom, the budget and the environment!

Yep. I had some Zappy's too. and no didnt have any gel stuff, as ^^ said, I believe they're 100% cotton.
maybe it was from the wipes you were using? or something?

My little miss wees a LOT, but not big wees, a small one every 15min or so (I know this because we have nappy free time a lot). Its not sensible or economical to change her every time she pee's (20+ nappies a day!)so i change every 2-3 hours (sometimes longer if were out and about, sometimes sooner if she poops, she gets changed asap).
We use nappies with "stay dry liners" mainly micro fleece or suade cloth to keep her bottom dry, and keep away rashes.
If I was doing EC I would change with each wee, but to be honest, DD doesn't mine being in a nappy for 2-3 hours, she has never had a rash (except when she was teething and that cleared up within a day), I don't see the problem.
