Hi everyone

After seeing the paed on Tuesday last week I was so excited to hear him say we should take Kade off Losec and see how he goes. I hate giving him medicine so young, and as those of you who use Losec know the dissolving of the tablet and administering it is just a pain.

So he came off Losec and Tuesday, and the last two days has been really unsettled again. I honestly think I got up to him about 12 times last night, and he is just really grumpy when he is awake. He's also not drinking very well.

Has anyone else had this experience when they've tried to stop Losec? Is it just a transition thing or does it mean I need to pop him back on it for now?

Any advice would be appreciated!

My DS's reflux just stopped on its own at 6 months. I took him off the Zantac because he was sick and on antibiotics so I didn't want to be giving him Zantac as well. He was fine when I took him off it. Sorry, I know that doesn't help, but I've heard of reflux stopping at about 6 months so if you are really struggling, maybe keep up the Losec for a little while longer or just wait a few more days and see if things improve??

Hi
I am not sure if the Losec would 'wear' off that quick, but try using some Mylanta and if this provides relief then you will know that the reflux is still a problem and you may need to go back to your paed.
Our DD had reflux and we used Mylanta and Zantac without any dramas. She came off the Zantac 8 weeks ago (she was 6 months old at the time) and we haven't had any symptoms or problems.
If you haven't tried Mylanta before I think you can give them 1ml every 4 hours - please check with your chemist or paed first.
Hope everything gets better soon, :hugs:

Hi there, my son was diagnosed with severe reflux at 11 weeks and was on Losec until around 10 months. Oesophagul reflux is a mechanical problem. Generally you find that it rights itself, or certainly life becomes easier for all, when bub is up and walking about. Gravity takes over.

If the medication is providing much needed relief for nasty acid then it's not bad for him. Mylanta, Zantac and Losec are all different. Losec neutralises the acid in the gut so that it doesn't hurt when the sphincter keeps opening and closing and the food rises. My son used to do projectile vomits on Losec - but the acid no longer burned in the gut or the oesophagus. You could certainly give Mylanta a go, but if Mylanta worked in the first place he wouldn't have needed Losec.

If the unsettled behaviour continues after Mylanta, give your Paed a quick call and he'll probably tell you to put him back on it. Hugs to you, it's not easy being the parent of a child with reflux.

Thanks girls - I spoke to the paed who said to pop him back on it, he obviously still has reflux problems. He actually has his dummy dipped in Mylanta every now and again and that was in full swing without the Losec. Poor little mite.

He has been heaps happier since going back on it, but still terrible at night - maybe teething? No red cheeks though, but waking crying quite often with his dummy in.

It's never ending, hey?!!
