View Full Version : Is it nappy rash?
DD has had a red bum for a week or so now and I am not sure if it is nappy rash or something else. Her bum is red and looks a bit 'dotty' but there are no pimples or blisters. She has a few spots of eczema coming up on her back, I am not sure if it is related.
She is in cloth full time and I use cloth wipes and chamomile tea to wash her. I was using ecostore detergent in the wash, but I have now changed to the soapnuts to see if that helps.
I have been using Gaia soothing lotion, which is helping - but it is not going away. I have also tried the pawpaw ointment and sudocream.
The weird thing is that the rash looks best in the mornings after 12 hours in her night nappy, it seems to get worse throughout the day. When I put her down for nappy free time, it looks ok, but then as soon as she wees it goes bright red. It actually seems better when she wees with a nappy on.
I have just bought some silk liners to try - stupid question...do you put cream on as well as the silk liner?
Bub doesn't seem too worried by it, but it is driving me crazy :hair:.
Any help much appreciated.

It could be a type of fungal infection, maybe a trip to the GP to get checked out? My son had something similar sounding although his was more on his lower abdomen/groin. The doctor gave us some hydrozole cream which has worked wonders and you can get without a script.
I tried every 'nappy rash' cream there was and it just wasn't shifting and would flare up and down for two weeks. Didn't bother him at all either but I hated seeing it look so horrible. Much happier now :)

It sounds like it might be fungal (thrush) in which case it might be worth trying something from the Chemist. Daktozin is the cream they will probably recommend although you have to be very careful that it doesn't get on your nappies - use disposable liners. Daktozin didn't work for us and my Health Nurse recommended trying an anti-fungal such as Clonea or Canestan cream. This works really well and I don't have to worry about it getting on the nappies because it rubs in.
I also washed all my nappies in Canestan anti-fungal laundry liquid. It is safe to use on MCN's.
If something from the chemist doesn't help then you might need a stronger cream from the Dr. Also not sure how old your bub is but if on solids make sure she is eating yoghurt regularly. In the bath just use plain water nothing else.
Thanks for the replies.
Hubnbubby - I think you are right about the fungal thing. I can't get into the doctors until next week, so I am off to the chemist today to get some anti-fungal cream and try that over the weekend.
SpottySocks - I am going to try the canestan wash of my MCNs - do you just put it in as the detergent or in the rinse cycle? How often do you use it?
Cheers

:iagree: might be fungal
I'd definatley do the canestan wash and get an anti fungal crm from chemist. I wouldnt recommned the Hydrozol yet, it just takes away the redness but doesnt solve the problem (just a bandaid effect) - if it is in fact fungal, plus long term use is not recommended.
Silk liners is a good idea, do you use differnt nappies during the day to the night time - just thinking is the linings different? My other thought is the washing powder, I had problems with some too. Now i just do a pre-wash and then normal cycle wash without any washing powder. Could it be from something DD is eating? My only other though is could it be teething, my friends bub used to have a horrid rash everytime she was teething.
Goodluck, hope it clears up really quickly!
Well, it sounds like it is fungal - I spoke to the chemist today and he thought the same. Before he sold me the hydrozole, we found a tea tree anti fungal cream. He looked at it for me and said yes to trying it first - designed to treat the same things, just less nasties to go on bubs bum :yelclap:.
Sorry, DD is 3 months, so not on solids yet just breastmilk. I am not sure if it is anything I am eating....
Oliviasmumma - I wouldn't be suprised if she is teething (although everyone says she is too young), her gums have changed to white and hard and she is dribbling like crazy! No obvious teeth yet...
I do use different nappies during the day, but I have been using flushable or silk liners in all nappies for the last couple of days. You might be right though..some of her day nappies have fleece lining and maybe she is getting hotter or the moisture is not getting taken away as well as it does in her bamboo night nappies. She has PUL in her night nappies or as a cover, so I don't think it is the issue.
Thanks again for all the help, if it is not better by Mon, we are off to the docs.

I just put it in the rinse cycle. I started using it about 2 months ago when DD got a really bad nappy rash and at the same time her nappies started smelling. I am probably using it once a fortnight at the moment, but that is because we have had such cold grey weather and the nappies haven't had much sunlight. The past week the weather has improved and I have noticed that a day in the sun makes a huge difference so hopefully I won't need to use it very often once the weather gets warmer.
Your DD could be teething, DD3 got her bottom 2 teeth at 12 weeks old much to everyone's surprise! Also when she is teething her poos are quite nasty on her skin and they seem to almost burn.

Yeah could be teething... it caused my DD to get nappy rash and some bubs wee's change when they're teething. Hard white gums, lots of dribbling sounds like it... they can teeth anytime, my friends bub was born with a tooth... so there you go ... never too early!
it might also be the fleece, I've heard some sensitive bubs having reactions to microfleece. Stick with the silk liners.
Goodluck for this weekend. Keep us upto date!

Update;
We have had some success :yelclap:. The rash is not completely gone, but it has improved heaps.
I have been using the anti-fungal cream as well as a barrier cream (Gaia soothing lotion) and using the canestan rinse. I think the little bit of irritation that is left is eczema...now, to address that problem :detective:.
The thing I have confirmed is that the rash got worse when she was wearing her nappies with fleece inners and microfibre inserts - maybe getting too hot . Her bum looks best in the morning after 12 hours in either BBH bamboo with PUL cover or Bambooty night nappy. I am thinking this means getting rid of some nappies....but a good excuse to buy more!!
Might try some SHP 'daysies' - any reviews?
Thanks again for all the advice.
