I am really worried as my DS for quite some time now has been rolling onto his tummy to sleep. When this first started I was terrified and kept checking him all night but he was ok coz he would roll his head to the side. I also put his matress on an angle with a pillow under the top as this is supposed to help if the roll on thier tummy.

However:

The last few nights i have checked him and he has his face down in the matress(which is a firm proper cot matress) but I just panic because I roll him over and then he squirms back into the same position. Im scared he will suffocate.

He is 7.5 months old. Should I be worried? Any suggestions other than going and checking him every 5 mins???

Don't panic, my dd is only a few days older than your DS (born 17/11/05)and she does the exact same thing.
I just let her sleep like that now...sometimes I roll her over when I go to bed, usually I just make sure her head is turned to the side and let her sleep. DD always has her hands tucked up under her chin, probably trying to keep them warm...she also likes to suck/lick her wrists when she is trying to get to sleep.

I wouldn't worry, at this age they have good control of their heads/necks so they are able to turn their head so they can breath properly...much like we do if our head gets covered when we are sleeping.

Thank you so much, at least he is not the only one to do it.

You are right about the headcontrol thing too, my DH said that but it always comes better from another mum!

Thanks:hugs:

No probs :) Hope I have helped you sleep better tonight.

I forgot to mention that DD also likes to sleep either across the cot, right at the top away from the blankets, or she turns upside down and I once found her with her head under tha blankets  The way she tucks herself into a ball keeps the blankets up so she could still breath properly, but now I make sure the blankets are tucked in enough so that she can't get under them, and she sleeps on top of them alot now...she never sleeps under them

Yeah Bailey hates blankets and kicks out and I usually find him across ways with his head hitting the sides of the cot! But he is comfy and if i move him he just moves back into the same position.

Bertandernie- he is very mobile. He is never in the same spot as i lay him. Its so strange, he always hated his tummy as a baby. I have always slept him ob his back but during play time i would give him tummy time and he would scream. Now i cant get him off his tummy:confused:

Thanks Ladies!

LOL DD was exactly the same.
Now she prefers to be on her tummy. She plays on her back for a few mins at a time, when she is tired from crawling the length of our lounge room...it's huge...but then a few mins later she's up and crawling for another toy :)

Thats fantastic that she is crawling! Bailey is showing signs that he is going to start soon but to be honest I think he is to lazy

Did your DS crawl early??

DD crawled 1 week before 7mths...DS was 7mths 2weeks...so no, he crawled later than DD. He rolled about 1mth earlier tho...we'll have to wait and see for the walking, DS was 12mths 1week when he started walking.

Does Bailey get up onto his hands and knees? Does he stay like that and rock? Thats what DD was doing for a couple of weeks before she crawled. Some bubs don't crawl 'properly'...some only ever do the comando crawl, some go on their hands and toes rather than knees  my friends bub did that one.

As soon as DD could roll over at 3 months she would sleep on her tummy. I spent many a sleepless night checking and checking her. I use to fight to get her to go to sleep on her back but as soon as she touches the mattress she's already on her way over.
Now I don't even bother laying her on her back when it's sleep time, just straight onto her tummy. Sometimes I still freak out if I go and check and she is completley face down instead of the side but she can roll either way now (7 months old) so sometimes I even find her up the other end or facing the other way.

Try not to panic Leanne about the tummy sleeping. I know it's hard. Wyatt was exactly the same, he still wriggles a lot in his sleep.

I drove myself bonkers when he started sleeping on his tummy by constantly checking to make sure he was breathing. as long as you dont have pillows etc up the end where his head is, he will be fine :) :hugs:

My first born learnt to roll over at 5wks, and from that day onwards, he slept on his stomach. I would roll him over before I went to bed, but he would just roll back. We had one of those wedge thingies that are supposed to stop them rolling, but he just rolled right over it. I asked the ECHN what to do about it and she said that short of me sitting by his bed all night and getting no sleep, there isn't much that can be done. Just make sure that there are no pillows, doonas, toys or anything that can get in the way of their breathing.

Are you sure you haven't got my DD? Thats sounds just like she was including the early rolling.

Thanks everyone for you responses! Im sure he will be fine, knowing that heaps of other babies do it and are fine too!

I dont have anything else in the cot so I guess its pretty safe!

I thought all the worry went away when they were born but I think I worry more now!

And the worrying will never stop Leanne, even when he's 40

Ah, kids... gotta love them  They send us all grey

Yep, pretty sure. He is 8.5 now and still sleeps on his tummy. Thing that got me though was he rolled over a week after his kidney surgery....I thought it would have hurt like hell, but it never bothered him.
