Hi Amanda,

I replied to your email but in answer to this thread, $40 would be a student covering her expenses only. No doula can operate on $40 fulltime as it is a big time committment and family sacrifice. You would be looking at upwards of $600 for a qualified doula usually.

You won't get a private midwife for $1000....there's too much involved and too much responsibility.....they usually charge 3000-4000. Plus you get 4000 from the government so if you wanted a hb that much you could pay once you got that through

The trainee Doulas I know charge around $250 in Sydney, and this does not cover expenses. They do it for the experience.

A fully qualified Doula will be anywhere from $600-$1500. And a Private Midwife costs around the same as an Obstetrician, around $3000-$4000 or more.

I hope you are able to get the birth you dream of, and I'm sure someone will help :fingerscrossed:

Yip, I looked into an independant midwife for my last birth just gone and the minimum (in Sydney) was $4000. One was $4500 but the majority charged the same prices.

Trainee doulas will often work free. I know I did when I was a trainee. Totally free - no "expenses", no nothing. I felt I should pay my clients for allowing me into their birth space to provide me with experience!

There is no standard fee for a certified / experienced doula, either. Many of us are more than willing to negotiate a fee (someone I know got paid in carrots) or even to waive a fee if a woman is truly in need and unable to offer compensation for the support of a doula. It's a passion, and a doula will never get rich from it. ;) In my experience the spectrum of fees ranges from nothing to around $1,000 (with most falling somewhere in the middle). I'm a little stunned to hear of doulas charging $1,500 actually ( ) - I'd be expecting one heck of a lot of antenatal and postnatal visits and one heck of a lot of extra qualifications (ie: naturopathy, homeopathy, massage, aromatherapy, lactation consultant even!) and lots of extra stuff thrown into the package for that much! But then again, that just highlights my point - every doula practices and charges uniquely. :)

Some independent midwives practice for around $2,000, too. They don't all charge $3,000 - $4,000 (thank goodness!). :)

It's all in the research and networking you can manage to do! Good luck!

Same here Felicity, that is how I feel too. You sound like my kind of doula!

Anyone out there need a doula? I could use a few carrots .....;)
