Hi Ladies

Inspired my Monkey&mums thread re:birth rape is real, I have decided to do a presentation for uni on birth trauma or 'birth rape,' and the post traumatic stress disorder that can be associated with it...

My presentation is based on the premise that birth is a natural act and not traumatic in itself, but can be traumatic as a result of actions of care providers. And that the idea of a 'good birth' in the eyes of medical professionals is based on good outcomes (ie live mother and baby), but a 'good birth' is often based on a positive birthing experience in the eyes of the woman, and involves informed consent and a sense of empowerment and ownership over her experience of birth. That one womans idea of the perfect birth can be dramatically different to anothers, eg some women find comfort in being closely monitored, some would like the most intervention free experience as possible and have a midwife/dr sit in the corner and not touch her at all (either of which or all variations are acceptable by the way, birth should be about what the MOTHER wants, but dont get me started on that it is another massive thread entirely!)

I would like to educate my fellow nursing/midwifery students on a topic that many of them are unaware of, and that is not talked about amoungst general society, in order to help address the differences in perception of birth between medical staff and birthing women and show them birth from a perspective that they most likely havent been exposed to before - i know its only a small ripple in a large pond but i hope if i can get through to at least a few of them that 'birth rape is real' then it may begin to come more out in the open and addressed accordingly to reduce its incidence, and after all these are the future midwives we (or our children) will be dealing with :)

So the purpose of this post is that i would like to include anecdotal evidence in my presentation - ie birth stories from women who have experienced 'birth rape' or have post traumatic stress disorder as a result of a traumatic birth (as i was less than happy with my care providers, but i would not class my previous birth as traumatic, so i can not quote my own story).

If anyone would feel comfortable with me using/quoting small parts of their birth story for these purposes, and permits me to do so, then please reply to my thread or PM me. I am particularly interested in what they did, why, and how that made you feel.

Also id like to say that i have good intentions and would like to help educate future professionals about birth trauma, and i am truly sorry if this is insensitive or offensive to anyone in any way, shape or form, or shouldnt be posted in this section of bubhub.

Thanks in advance,
Lisa
