Recently, I posted a question about whether or not to get my 11-month-old a doll. Today, I went out and bought her a Cabbage Patch Baby (not one of the newborns that lay down...but it's not a "kid"...if that makes sense).

I went to 3 different stores and checked them all out before making my final decision. A lot of the them were some weird "changing hair colour" weird versions...with fluro steaks in their hair...and since I didn't like those, I didn't have much choice when it came to the more original dolls. I ended up picking a black baby girl doll.

DD is white.

Anyway, I DID think about it for a second...that DD is white and the doll is not...but figured it didn't matter and went on my merry way.

We bumped into some people we knew at the shops, and they saw the doll. They asked if it was a present for someone else...and when I told them it was for DD, they acted a bit strange and said, "But she's not black." I also just KNOW that some of my friends will comment on its race too...

Should I have not gotten her a black doll?

I thought it was would be fine, because perhaps it would better encourage her to grow up being non-descriminative...

I think it is fine.

You like the doll, and if your daughter likes the doll, then there is no problem.

 Yes of course it's fine! There are always going to be 'those' people who just have to make a comment. Silly people

I think its fine !
I doubt very much that you DD will care either & it seems like she is happy with it so dont worry about other peoples reactions its only adults who make it into such a fuss !

i think its fine also....:)

that said i dont think a child having a black doll is going to make her more accepting of other races.....i think having a very cool wise mum like yourself is going to play a bigger role in how she thinks about other races:thumbsup: :D

All that matters is that DD likes the doll!!!

When I was little my sister had a black baby doll. She is 10 years older than me, so by the time I wanted to play with dolls she was over them, but i used to have to fight my other sister for it. our dolls were boring compared to her beautiful black one!!!

Perfectly fine, at her age she can't see the difference anyway.

Yup... it's totally fine. Ally has a black baby doll and she loves it to bits. I remember I had one as well and I loved her because she reminded me of my favourite biccys as a kid. (no racial slur there either)...

Black or white.... meh to me everyone's the same. The same is for toys. I'm sure Chanel will love Jamie

As no one blinked an eye at my having white dolls when I was younger, I don't see why it would be an issue for someone else to have a black doll.

It just goes to show how far race relations HASN'T come these days.

This is slightly off topic, but in terms of how far we havent come....A friend of mine went to buy her 6 year old DD a baby born doll for her birthday. In each major deparment store, the black dolls were less expensive than the white ones:eek: I was horrified.

PS. My friends DD now has a lovely black doll called Jasmine.

Very true story. I found the same when buying my DD one.

White dolls more expensive? Are they for real????? thats disgusting!:shame:

Here check these dolls out they are priced the same and come in a range of ethinicities look under baby toys

www.organictradingco.com

I also dont like the idea of it being "cool" to have a minority doll just to prove a point iykwim

The whole point of dolls from different ethnicities is so children (other then white, blonde haired, blue eyed kids) can have dolls that reflect their cultural background and ethnic appearence in a positive way.

Glad to hear that not everyone thinks it's strange...I didn't.

I also didn't buy the doll because I thought it was "cool" for DD to have a minority doll...I just thought it was cuter than the others that I found. Most of the others had fluro streaks in their hair, or had "wool" hair...and I just wanted some normal Barbie-type synthetic hair. She also had 3 teeth, which was pretty cute. I just liked the look of her in general...

Sassysmum- I wasnt suggesting you bought the doll to cause controversy or to be "cool" i was simply stating that some people do and this is a shame.

Hope i didnt offend, not my intention at all:)

My parents gave me a black cabbage patch doll for my 6th birthday and I still have her. I called her Robyn and I dragged her every where for the next four years. She's still in excellent condition and I'll be giving her to Aribella when she's older.
Mum said she bought a black doll for the same reason as you, it was much nicer looking. I'm sure Chanel will love her doll as much as I loved mine.

OMG, I just worked out my doll is 21y.o  , man do I feel old now.

I don't see anything wrong with it, we live in a very multicultral (sp) country, there are a few black doll at playgrup and the kids don't give it a seoind thought.

ETA: I used to have a Mouri (sp-you know the New Zealand natives) doll when I was younger.

I dont understand why they made that comment. Does that mean only black children should have black dolls, i wouldn't think so!:o

I certainly dont see it as an issue. I think it is good to have variety:yes:

Would they have made the comment "But your DD doesn't have fluro streaks in her hair" if you had of chose the other types? lol... you get what i mean.

I think that it is fine to give your DD a black doll no prob at all!!!!!! I don't see how people can think that it is a problem!

My nagged and nagged for a black doll when I was really little - I called her Jessica and loved her to bits - in fact I still have her. I really dont think you need to worry about the race of dolls - not at all!

Hi, I'm a bit late on this post but htought I would add my bit:p

I had a Gollywog doll when I was a kid. All I can remember is it being my favourit till it fell apart.
You just can't buy them anymore (that I know of anyway) But I think they were awsome dolls.

This is a bit of the subject................. I was looking in the bicki section of the supermarket and came across a pk. of gollywog biscuits. I was so excited and bought them. When I got home I relised that they were actuly called Scallywags:confused:

I think things are getting a bit silly now.
