Hiya,

A girlfriend of mine used hypnobirthing as a relaxing tool while in labour, and found it mosly effective for keeping herself calm and focused. She and her hubby went to classes for around 6 weeks I think, and they were hoping to use it as her only pain relief.

However, She didn't think it did too much for the actual pain - but then she ended up having complications and an emergency c-section, which was probably why her pain was quite bad.

I think its a great idea, you can never be prepared enough, and to have hypno techniques as an option is something I am looking into.

Yep, DH is a hypnotherapist and we used it.

I loved the entire labour and birth. Can't wait to do it again.

At it's worst it felt like period cramps. At best, it felt almost orgasmic (sorry if TMI). I smiled through most of my contractions (or "surges" as they're called in hypnobirthing). At one point just before transition, DH asked me if I was doing ok, because I was so relaxed he thought I was falling asleep.

I didn't even think of any medical pain relief. My waters broke Christmas Eve morning and contractions started not long after. I didn't give birth to DS until Boxing Day evening. In all that time I never even thought about asking for pain relief. The fact that it was available didn't even cross my mind.

It also helped with feeding. DS latched straight away and we never had any feeding issues (except an OVERSUPPLY issue with milk at about 2mths).

I can't recommend it highly enough.

I asked my OBS what she thought of me having a doula and she mentioned hypnobirthing. Sounds interesting and may have to look into it - it seems like the popular thing to do at the moment BUT i have heard great things....

Yes, I used it for both labour's
DH learnt the relaxation techniques from my Hypnotherapist. You can read about it in my thread "Hypnotherapy - my experience".
The support person present during DS1's birth said I was very calm, relaxed and centred (on my contractions) - even though I didn't think I was

It is a brilliant book.

I have a friend due any day now and only 2 weeks ago she was petrified of the birth. I lent her the book and she called me the next day to tell me how excited she is about it and how much she's looking forward to labour.

It alters your perspective in a massive way!!
