Hi Guys!

I'm not sure if Chloe is constipated or not but she is really straining when she is trying to poo and it must hurt her cos she gets very upset!
Do any of you have any ideas how to make her poo runnier? at the moment it's always a big lump.

Is she bottle fed or breast fed lovely? If bottle, try adding extra water to the bottle (for instance, my bub needs 6 scoops to 180mls but I put 6 scoops to 200mls). You can also try some brown sugar (just a qtr of a teaspoon) - apparently this also helps.

If she gets really bad, Coloxyl drops (over the counter at chemists) work a treat but they are only for when she get little hard pellets (a sign of constipation).

Has she always struggled to go to the toilet? My DS always struggled, and had heaps of wind, and he ended up being intolerant of dairy. :fingerscrossed: you don't have the same issues

She can't have milk but she eats cheese and yoghurt and I give her soy milk, she is breastfed but only once a day as I'm weaning her, I can't remember the last time I saw a runny poo lately they've all been hard.

Sorry hon - I saw her photo and thought she was born May this year... if she is on solids maybe it is normal for it to be harder? My DS is still on milk only so I really have no idea. Good luck though! Constipation is the worst, Kade screamed so fiercely when he had it

When Nath was around 12mths he went through months of horible constipation:(
I had used various over the counter medications but found that the problem would always return once I took him off them. I monitered his fibre and water intake and knew that was not a problem. I took him to the Dr and she put him on "Parachoc" (over the counter medication) for 2 mths. This gave him time to get the poos comeing regularly and ever since he has pooed every day sometimes twice with out any screaming and straining for 2 hours.
Parachoc is chocolate flavoured so I had no problem getting him to take it.

I had a bad problem with my DS being constipated for ages with the brown sugar and prune juice and all that failing.
I just kinda delt with it the best i could and tried to keep him calm in his screaming fit whilst trying to "push" it out.

BUT! when i gave him apple juice (watered down of course) he drank a cup full one day and the next day boy oh boy it ran outa him (TMI!) no but seriously i dont give him so much now but about half a cup of apple juice a day has worked wonders for my little man!

So you could try that along with the other lovely ladies suggestions and GOOD LUCK!:fingerscrossed:

I can sympathise (sp?) with how distressing it can be sometimes :)

When we first intraduced solids our little man got so badly constipated that he screamed every time he tried to poo. Eventually we got it moving with pureed prunes. I just bought some ready to eat prunes and steamed them for a bit, then pureed. As a preventitive, I add prunes to his breakfast every few days.

When my DD was constipated round her first Birthday, I tried everything from prune juice to lots and lots of water , to over the counter medicines. None of them worked, her poo was always so hard and came out in big golf balls. She sometimes strained so hard I thought she would burst a blood vessel.
Sick as it wounds, the only way I could think of to help her was to massage her bottom. I got a thin platsic glove on with a bit of vaseline and gently massaged her bum hole, it seemed to really help. She would usually end up crapping all over my hand, which is actually a really nice feeling to know you have helped your little girl. I ended up buying Anna lots of fruit in syrup (the weight watchers ones are the only ones she will eat) and giving her one a day, makes her go like clockwork now.

Hi

Does your DD drink water everyday? Aslong as she has heaps of fluids (water) she should be right. I know not every baby will drink water as they should, if not try diluted juice.

Good luck

Definately go the prunes...they'll clean everything out!
I put some prunes in a saucepan with water and just let them simmer away. Then add water to the juice that is left in the saucepan (make sure it's pretty diluted otherwise...whoah!) and put it in a cup or bottle.
Does the trick every time.

Pears are great for constipation. I add pears to DS' rice cereal every couple of days to keep him regular. He's had no problem since.

And definitely increase fluids. A lot of the time constipation is caused by insufficient fluids.

ummm try pureed pears or pear juice...or if its really bad and really really hurting her then you could get coloxyl drops which works wonders!!!!

Too much dairy can cause constipation try cutting her cheese back, that is a big one for causing it apparently, it worked with my two, coloxyl as previously mentioned is great too!

I know most people have suggested one or the other, prunes or pears. I found stewing one pear to 2 chopped prunes really helpped. Mind you i found more than one serve, was too much for the nappy the next day.
Good luck:fingerscrossed:
