View Full Version : How to wean onto bottle?
Hi I'm going back to work soon and trying to wean my 6 mth old ds onto the bottle. I've tried different bottles, teats, formulas and EBM but he just chews the teat. I've also tried a cup but he also chews on the spout. Any milk that he does get he spits out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I am probably not going to be much help, sorry as DD took the the bottle no probs. But I have heard that if someone other than you offers the bottle to start with it can help, as they expect boob from mummy.
The other method (which sounds really hard to do!!) is to not offer the breast all day. It is rare for a bub to go totally without, and they will usually eat if they are hungry enough - even from a bottle. So when the bottle isrejected, don't offer the breast, the next time he is hungry only offer the bottle. I only read this somewhere, and don't know of anyone who has tried it - it sounds really hard to do!!
Try a straw cup ... both of my kids were well able to use one at 6 months and as it requires a strong sucking motion, it may be easier for bub to get used to.

I found that i needed to do something when i wanted to go back to the gym as my little man was due for a feed about the time i was there so we introduced comp feeding. One to give me a break and two so that his dad could have some bonding time. The brand pigeon is really good as the teats are developed so that the bub feels like they are still sucking on the breast as they use the same tongue motion. Eventually they will take any teat that you give them. I use the heinz formula and have had no problems with it at all, it might come down to that also. Hope this helps.....

I have a similar problem only I know DD will take EBM from the bottle so it's not that. Formula tastes very different from BM I think that's the problem for my DD.
For you, have you tried pigeon peristaltic teats? I'm told the're the nearest to real nipples.
Good luck, I'm keen to hear everyone's suggestions.
Hi
I've tried the pigeon teats & bottles as well as Avent & Nuk. Guess I'll keep persisting. Thanks for all your suggestions.

I use the Pur Regular neck, orthodontic (sp?) teats. Ollie took the bottle no problems, and on the occasions when I breast feed (no more than once per day, sometimes less) he has no "nipple confusion".
Give them a go, he has to work his jaw the same way as when he is nursing.
Goodluck!
