View Full Version : cleaning question
Hi guys? Just a quick question, today was our first trial of cloth (yay!). We used an itti bitti and so far so good. SOrry for tmi but Noah did a big poo, I'm using disposable liners which caught most of it and just popped that in the loo, but there was still a bit that got on the actual nappy. Do I need to get it all off before washing, or is it ok for there to be a bit still on it? I figure it's ok coz not everyone uses liners, but those that dont maybe use a little squirt I dont know? Is it ok for it to be sitting with it on it until washing, or is that the whole idea and this is just a really stupid question :o
cheers

I usually get all the solid bits off, or if it was a runny poo and its gone everywhere then I rinse it in the laundry tub before washing. :) Just so it doesn't clog up the filters etc in the washing machine lol.
For BM poos (before she was on solids) I'd just throw it straight in the pail. Now that DD is on solids, I just make sure there's no actual poo left - so I scrape and then rinse, but only to make sure the solid bits are gone. Yuk:o
yeh its a pretty gross thing to talk about really :D Ok maybe I'll give it a bit of a rinse then, its like a tiny bit but the idea of it possibly floating around in the wash is a bit gross. I spose thats why some people do a pre-rinse first?
Also, for night time I wanted to get a couple of pul covers just for extra protection against leakage. Is there somewhere I can just go buy these cheapish rather than online? Or is it better to spend that little bit more eg. bbh nappy covers so that they are good quality?

i have a spatula (stolen from kitchen) and run under gentle tap, scrape into bucket at same time! then i flush in toilet.

isnt that annoying to do numerous times a day? Noah literally does 3-5 per day, I think it would drive me nuts having to do that each time?

Not sure about places aside from the internet... however either nurture nappies or darlings down under have bbh pul covers in sets of 4 or 6 on special atm. Sorry i can't remember which store i saw them at lol.

I always put my nappies on a rinse cycle first to get rid of any residual poo.
Em 1984, you're better off with a wool or fleece cover for nights. The BBH wool covers are great. If you know someone who knits, ask them to whip you up a pair of shorties or a soaker.

so you just let them sit till then? And it all comes off ok?

I just put all nappies in the bucket straight off the backside. When the bucket is full I put it next to the washing machine. The wet ones go straight into the machine, the poo ones into the trough. All solids go into the toilet, then I rinse any leftovers in the sink and they all go into the machine. Cold rinse and hot wash (in winter) cold wash in summer. Easy as. I only do the scrape bit before I wash all of the nappies as I found that when I rinsed the nappies before I stored them in the bucket some of them went mouldy after 2 days and the bucket smelt reall really bad!!

I'm lazy too.
I only wash my wool covers about once a month or two (I air them out during the day). When I wash them, I put a blob of Lansinoh (pure lanolin, used for sore nipples- a free sample from the hospy!) into some hot water, let it dissolve, add some cold water to make it warm then soak the cover for half a day. Easy!
aaah that would be easier, and I have SOOO much of that lansinoh its not funny...hmm maybe I'll suss some of them out then....I've seen some of them second hand too....

I usually just pop any nappies that have residual poo on them in a cold water bucket until it's time to do a whole load. That softens things and I give them a quick rinse under the tap and then pop them in the machine.
As I always do a rinse cycle first, that takes care of everything else.
But I actually wanted to ask other people about rinsing. If there's no poo issues, is it always necessary to rinse first or do you just wash as normal? I like to do a rinse cycle but the water, you know ...

I love woolies to prevent night time leaks! You lanolise them and just air them out in the morning. They were the only thing that stopped DS wetting through at night. He reacted badly to PUL, and they tended to leak out the sides.
I only wash mine when they start to leak again or when they get a bit stinky which is every 3-6 weeks, you can get an extra week or so by topping them up with lanolin spray which smells yummy too.
I only pre- rinse if there is poo, or teething wee.
I scrape of any solid bits of poo & then just throw in the bucket. When I wash I always rinse first & you should find if there is any staining left, the sun should get it out.
Chesby- I always rinse. My machine actually has a nappy rinse cycle, so I use that & then wash.

Hey Em
I use a little squirt... i swear by it! certainly worth the investment (cos we have explosions in this house hold -sorry TMI!)
before I had a squirt though I just tried to flip the poop into the loo - I was using wahsable fleece liners and the poop just rolls off (sorry again TMI). I found if I left the nappy with the poop on it for say a day - it stained the nappy and although I put them in the sun, it took a few washes and sunny days to get the stain out! I'd def. get rid of any poops asap.
Im using the BBH pul covers and love them. I think they're pretty reasonable price too. I did use wool covers initially, but DD does explosions in the morning, so I had to wash the wool covers like all the time and then lanolize - so for us just didnt work.
maybe wool might work, but i think its trial and error. You can buy second hand stuff all the time too!

I dont think there is a right or wrong way!! :) just do what works for you. I figure so long as I have clean nappies without any stains then it must be ok! Trial different ways til it works for you!
