View Full Version : What vacuum cleaner do you prefer?
Hi Guys
Im sick of buying Vacuum cleaners!!! owned 3 in the last 6 months, and they keep breaking on me :banghead:
Never owned an up-right vac.. only the portable ones with the hose...( lol..i'll call them portable ones.. you know what im talking about  )
My question is... which ones are better... the up-right.. or the portable ones..????

Just one word - DYSON.
I have an upright, but other people I know have the other sort, and say they are great, too.
I'd be quite happy to say I could rave about my vacuum cleaner since I bought the Dyson.

They cost an arm and both legs.
I paid $900ish about 5 years ago.
They do a phenomenal job, though.

  that might not fit into my budget at the moment..
I was thinking something in the hundred dollar range :o :D
mine was about $450 a few years ago
they are going down though...

and this is exactly why its worth spending the higher amount ONCE !! :D
(but of course i do understand that not everyone can fork out the big amounts....)
I have to agree with aardvark on that one. We bought a Dyson the week we moved into our new house. We vacuumed the carpets AFTER they had been professionally cleaned. You should have seen the cat hair and c#*p that came out! We got a WHOLE canister full just from the lounge room.
It is the best investment that we have made. Our previous vacuums gave me allergies and sneezing; absolutely none of that with the Dyson as it has a HEPA filter. (filters all the pollen and dust) Go the Dyson!

normal one for me :D
I have a 'volta' can't remember the rest of it's name...made by electrolux. I've had it for about 3yrs...cost about $150. DS jumped on it and broke the suction control so I got my dad to pull it apart and set it to full suction for me, and it's been fine ever since  I would like to buy a better one, but this one does the job...as long as you vacuum every day or 2 not once a week as I like to :o
An alternative to spending a fortune on a Dyson (which I have heard both very good and very bad things about) would be to look at getting a 'commercial vacuum'. My parents got one 21yrs ago and it's still going now without a problem. It's about the size of a normal vacuum, has wheels to move it around, etc...kinda looks like a barrel on wheels...theirs is a 'Nilfisk' brand, tho it wasn't called that 21yrs ago when they got theirs. I was talking about getting a new vac with my mum recently and she said hers cost her about $500 back when she got hers.
Anyway...just my thoughts....happy vacuuming :D
We have a 20+ yr old electrolux, you just can't kill em!
Mum gave it to us when we moved in together, since giving it to us 6 yrs ago they have had about 8, and every single one has died. They're sorry they gave us the old reliable electrolux!

Hoover Windtunnel for me!
Upright, has a sensor that tells you when the area is clean, and has an allergy filter. Much smarter than me!

I was just about to post about our latest family member  when I saw this thread! Tonight we bought a new vacuum after ours blew up the other day and we decided to just go with the Dyson. It was $439 down from $749 at Bing Lee (fantastic end of financial year sales atm) and I am so excited I just want to vacuum. We have now throroughly decided that this has been one of the best purchases ever - I just got it out of the box and put it together - it is very swanky - and I vacuumed our rug (we have polished floor boards throughout) and I was amazed and disgusted! I could not believe that in 2 minutes or less, nearly a half a canister came out of a little rug in our lounge room! The rug looks brand new! I am so excited and absolutely loving the upright!

I can't vote in this poll as I have a vaccuum maid, which is in the wall. You just plug a long vuccuum hose into it and all the dirt goes into a container in the garage.
I love it because there is not vaccuum to push or pull around.

Up right is suppose to work better.
I have a "standard" drag along. It's a Miele, and I love it. I've had uprights before, and I hate them, I find them awkward and clumsy to manoeuvre and very heavy. With an upright you have to push the weight of the whole machine with every sweep, if you understand what I mean, whereas with a drag along you are only pushing the hose and nozzle back and forth.
Unfortunately I think that vacuum cleaners are just one of those things that it is worth spending the money on a good one. If you can manage it, try to save up and get a good one, it will be worth it in the long run.
when we were growing up mum owned a stand up vacuum, so i was used to them. now i have a standard portable one, and geez they annoy me something shocking.

I find the major problem with the upright is that we have nowhere to store it and I can't get under things easily.

DYSON!!! :smiliedance: :smiliedance: :smiliedance:
I just bought a dyson telescopic thingo it's AMAZING go now get one if you have Bing Lee in your area go there I got mine for $721 it was $899 at other stores!
I have a purple dyson and as it's so gorgeous it doesn't need to be put away.
I haven't had allergy - asthma since we got it. It is really fab and easy to use, plus you can take it all apart almost (discovered this last weekend when I hoovered up too many woody bits from the log pile) if you get a blockage. I have used and abused my Dyson and it still goes well :o
It's also great for hoovering spiders up from the pergola :D
Dyson for me too!
I have a cylinder one that we used in the UK for 3-4 years before moving to OZ. The dyson came with us and we've been using it here for nearly 4 years.

I lovvvvvve my Dyson !!!!
Just a quick note that not a lot of people realise.. when purchasing carpets, the manufacturer can void your warranty if not using a vaccuum with a rotating head. This is usually only found in upright cleaners, though I believe Dyson are now doing the other kind with this type of head? Dunno if any other manufactuers are.
Reason being that its only this type that will pick up dirt that has been ground into the carpet, and this friction on the fibres is what causes damage.
I need to get a life, I know.

It seems to be the way to go - I love my Dyson. It is 7 years young and still going strong. There are different ones, they start at around $450 and go up to $900. I want to update and buy the one with the anti bacterial head (or something like that on it).
Best thing you can do is buy one. Well worth the cash. It even makes me want to vacuum because it is so easy.:smiliedance: :smiliedance: :smiliedance:

We have a Miele Cat and Dog barrel which has been fantastic. I chose it after killing 3 vacuums in a short space of time (LG, Hoover and Volta). We have a german shepard who lives inside so need something that is heavy duty.
I used to recommend this over the Dyson (MIL has the top of the line one which I have used regularly) but have recently found out that to buy and equivalent new model would cost $1500  (we paid just over $400 4/5 years ago).
What's your budget? Then maybe we can recommend a good vacuum cleaner within that range.

I have an Electrolux which is completely computerised. It's fantastic!!! My Mum has a Miele which has been fantastic, rather expensive though.
I've got a Mielle standad vacuum that has phenomenal suction for its size!
BUT... I have to admit that the next vacuum I buy will definitely be a Dyson! If you can stretch your budget just the once, it will pay for itself over many years of vacuuming.

ok first off let me just say YOU ALL SHOULD WORK FOR DYSON, YOUVE MADE ME WANT ONE:laughing: :yelclap: but i just wanted to say that i have a pullman, its a comercial cleaner and its not the cutest or most fancy vaccume but its not huge and its bagless:yes: i was told by the lady at the vaccume shop that it will probably last longer than some others on the market because it is designed to be used alot and be roughed around hehehe....it cost me $199 so still not the cheapest but it does a good job imo:thumbsup:

we brought our vac only a few weeks ago from godfreys, you can get them on a payment plan so we got a $400-$500ish one and we only have to pay $15 a fortnight for a year. pretty good idea i thought seeing as how we were poor at the time!
anyway back to the point, we were going to get a bagless until the very nice (and suprisingly not pushy) salesman told us you need to clean the filters out like after every use, so i decided that was too much effort for me. lol. anyway we got a cloth bag one, and i gotta say it is GREAT!!!!!!! and the bag holds so much, i have vac'd our whole house several times (and it hadnt been done for several months since we didnt have on prior to this) and i only just had to throw it away the other day! has a hepa filter aswell. and one of the cool heads for the carpet, which is brilliant.
but yeah when we went in they had bagless ones from around $100 as well.:ecomcity:

We used to have an upright Volta that was hopeless.
I tried someone else's Dyson and was hooked. We bought ours about 2 years ago and it was a fantastic investment. It literally pulls dirt and dust where you are convinced there is none. It looks funky too, we've got the purple and green one.
Dyson, Dyson, Dyson.:smiliedance:

hi
i am another dyson fan but would never spend that much on a vacuum - you can buy the cheaper replicas which are just as good - you get 2 vacuums for $250 so i have one up either end of the house now!
there called a gale force and you see them on tv alot - same technology as a dyson just heaps cheaper:

I love my upright LG shark.. but we're upgrading to a Dyson soon :smiliedance: I would love a Kirby but they are way too expensive. Only crazy ppl would pay over 2k for one.
thanks for the info :) i didnt know godfreys offer a payment plan do you have to be working to do that?
i think you just have to have money coming in, so i think that like family payments or something like that would count.
when we got ours you only needed a $1 deposit and about $28 to set up the whole payment plan thing.
