View Full Version : feeding bub after gastro
Just wondering if anybody can help with some food ideas for my little 16mth old boy. He's suffering with a bad gastro infection that has been going now for 5 days. He can keep water down but the little bits of food that we try to give him don't seem to want to stay there. We've tried the dry vegemite toast, crackers, scrambled egg, fruit puree and milk and it all comes up. Any ideas on things that may be more gentle for his poor little sensitive tummy. I'm really at a loss as to what to do now. We've been to the doc and they just say to just concentrate on the fluid, but at some stage he has to eat so I need some ideas. Please help. :(

Your poor thing,
Whenever my kids have been sick, I have offered them an ice block bar that is available from chemists called Hydralyte. They have been made for just that purpose. They come in an orange box and they help replace the electolytes. If you ask at the chemist, they will be able to help with something.
I have also used Powerade or Gatorade, to get something into them.
Food wise, the blander the better. Plain boiled rice, grated apple.
Good Luck.
try plain rice, apple and banana.
Dry crackers or toast
When my 14 month old son had gastro he lived on Cruskits and they stayed down fine, that plus fluids seemed to keep him going ok...
If he wont take gastrolyte try watered down cordial or juice or lemonade. His sugar levels need to be kept up not just his fluid levels.
Its a hard time for you but just hang in there.
Thank you so much for the advice girls. I bought some cruskits but have had little success with them. Will cook up a little rice today and give that a go. Banana seems to be staying down really well and I also grabbed a bottle of banana and apple cereal from the baby food section (in desperation) and he's loved that and kept that down.
Mitch has definately perked up heaps this morning since he's been able to keep some food down. It's been so hard the last few days cause I know he's been hungry but giving him food just made him vomit so I was so torn about what the right thing to do was. Hopefully we're on the mend now and he'll be better soon.
By the way, I've pumped myself with Inner Health to avoid catching his germ and so far so good. Hopefully I can escape it, where ususally I catch everything he has going.
Thanks again for your suggestions.......much much appreciated.

When my daughter has been sick I always stop giving her milk because she always just brings it back up. We just keep it to water and flat lemonade, plain rice, toast, just boring stuff with no flavour.
