Dear Mr ____________ (an open letter to my former employer)

I worked for you in the Darwin store in 1998. I was a part time employee until one of my co-workers died. I temporarily filled his position for 3 months and was then fired for what I belatedly realized was an accusation of stealing from the till over the course of my employment. It actually took me a few months to work out what had happened. You had said to me that I had cost you a lot of money, I’d thought you were referring to my occasional clumsiness when cutting canvas! I guess I was pretty naive then.

I’d loved that job and was great at upselling to the customers, who would come back and show me their creations, often with thankyous for the encouragement.

Anyway, it s a bit off topic. I’m not sure why I’m bothering to write to you after all these years, I guess I have to tell someone.

Today I came across one of my former co-workers. She came clean and admitted that she had actually been taking money from the till when I went on lunch break most days, sometimes a few dollars and sometimes much more. She had no guilt over it and actually said that it had been great being able to blame me as she’d been a long standing employee and “needed the extra cash.” She showed no guilt, actually seemed quite proud of how she’d done it.

I guess I just needed to tell you. It had ruined my reputation for years afterwards when looking for work.

Wow that would really suck.

I would send it, Let him know the truth and maybe to look into things first.

I hope you get an apology and some closure from your ex-boss, maybe he will not be so quick to judge next time without investigating the circumstances.

I wonder how some people sleep at night and I hope the woman who did the stealing gets hit by the karma-train.

I would send it.

I would need someone else who thought I'd stolen from them to know the truth.

I think it would bring about closure for me.

Especially if you draft and swear an affidavit detailing exactly what she told you so he can pass it along to the police... oh sorry. My vengeful legal left-brain took over there for a minute. ;)

Wait... you can do that?

Would that work?

Do it!!

Last year I resigned from a job as I was miserable and hated it, my talents and my degree were going totally unused serving at a till (in a place where there was plenty of opportunity to utilise me at no extra cost to them). Money had been going missing during my time there and I always wonder if they thought it was me. I figured out who it was and she still has her job so I figure I may have been the scapegoat. It would play on my mind terribly if I knew people did think this of me.

So long as you don't name names (not sure of the defamation ramifications). Good luck and I hope you get some closure.

Send it. Tell your boss. It will make you feel better to know the truth and hopefully he will write and apologise, too.
