Dear Mr ____________ (an open letter to my former employer)
I worked for you in the Darwin store in 1998. I was a part time employee until one of my co-workers died. I temporarily filled his position for 3 months and was then fired for what I belatedly realized was an accusation of stealing from the till over the course of my employment. It actually took me a few months to work out what had happened. You had said to me that I had cost you a lot of money, I’d thought you were referring to my occasional clumsiness when cutting canvas! I guess I was pretty naive then.
I’d loved that job and was great at upselling to the customers, who would come back and show me their creations, often with thankyous for the encouragement.
Anyway, it s a bit off topic. I’m not sure why I’m bothering to write to you after all these years, I guess I have to tell someone.
Today I came across one of my former co-workers. She came clean and admitted that she had actually been taking money from the till when I went on lunch break most days, sometimes a few dollars and sometimes much more. She had no guilt over it and actually said that it had been great being able to blame me as she’d been a long standing employee and “needed the extra cash.” She showed no guilt, actually seemed quite proud of how she’d done it.
I guess I just needed to tell you. It had ruined my reputation for years afterwards when looking for work.
