View Full Version : Soy based formula and infant boys

My son is now 5 months old and has been on soy based formula for 3 months. I have just found out he has milk protein intolorance so he will go onto prescription formula now and it sems that the soy based formula doesn't help his condition so him being on it was pointless.
I am a bit worried now because I have heard some studies show that soy milk can be detrimental to the developement of boys. I was reading that it can act as estrogen and cause a hormone imbalance. Do you believe there is much truth to this study.
I am probably being paranoid because my older brother is gender disoriented and while I love him all the same it's a terrible thing for someone to have to go through and deal with.

There might be some truth to it but I still wouldn't worry. My husband has been drinking soy milk since he was a baby and is the fittest, strongest and most virile man I know! I do realise that one person doesn't negate an entire study, but I really, really would not worry at all or even bother thinking about it, tbh. A few months in his life is not going to have any detrimental effects.

Don't feel stupid - it is a legitimate study - but I think as parents we worry SO much about SO many things - and some things really are less important than others. We are all dedicated soy drinkers in our house and have been for years and years - and no adverse effects (so far!) :D
Oh yes and I am totally and utterly convinced that soy does not cause homosexuality. Nothing `causes' it - you're born gay or you're not.
DP and I have talked about how we would feel if any of our children were gay. It was a three-second conversation:
Me: How would you feel if ____ were gay?
DP: Meh.
Me: Me too.
What your brother is going through must be very, very hard for him. The poor thing - how awful and confusing. But I'm sure that soy milk doesn't cause anything like that, I really am sure.

Yes there are some concerns & there are two reasons for this.
One being that the proteins are similar to cows milk so a child who has a protien issue with dairy will more than likely have the same issue with soy so there is little use in trialling it iykwim.
The second being about the Phyto-Estrogens ...
If you google you will find loads of info etc but I would assume that being that bubs isnt going to be on it much longer that all will start clearing from his system before any real harm can be done ... It would have to be pro-longed IMO to really cause major harm.
There are some sites that talk about homosexuality but that isnt the issue that most are worried about
Phyto-Estrogens are cancer causing & our Western soy is treated in such a manner that it makes 'our' soy not as beneficial as our asian counterparts.
THIS (http://www.soyonlineservice.co.nz/index.htm) site gives some great info but this obviously isnt something you have to take on board but can at least be a starting point for you to look into if you feel the need to although being that you are changing I wouldnt be overly stressed !
We're on goats milk formula and it's working a treat. have you tried that?

Goats milk is a  good alternative when the problem is the lactose, but the protein strings in cows milk, goats milk and soy are similar in complexity and length. :)
(If you imagine the pictures that Hollywood crime/cop shows display about DNA beings long and twisty - well that's a similar idea about protein strings):dizzy:
When a bubs has a protein intolerence the prescription formula's have the protein broken down (called denuded or partially digested) - and bubs can finish the digestive process.
It will take about a fortnight for bub's gut to heal and start to act/react a bit more noramlly - so don't expect miracles immediately
