Today I had my 20 weeks scan and when I opened the results to look at the pictures, I read the report and felt physically sick.

It says that "There are two choroid plexus cysts seen in the left side of the brain - a teriary refferal for detailed morphological assessment is suggested".

I have been reading up on them, and they can be associated with Edwards Syndrome which can lead to having a stillborn or my baby dying in the first year of life. It also says though, to have a greater chance of having a baby with Edwards Syndrome (trisonomy 18), there would need to be other abnormailities in the baby, such as in the heart, hands, feet etc - but everything else in the scan was fine.

Has anyone else out there had this occure during a routine ultrasound? What was the next step? I am seeing my Doc tomorrow but wanted to find out what others in my situation have done.:(

Oh dear.... :hugs:

I don't know anything about Edwards Syndrome or choroid plexus cysts but I just wanted to say...routine scans often pick up what they call 'soft markers' which are things that may point to there being an abnormality, or they may mean nothing at all - especially in the absence of other markers for that condition. Glad you're going to your doc tomorrow - try not to stress too much because chances are everything will be ok.

This site is very very good http://choroidplexuscyst.org/forum/ There are people at this site who know all about cpcs and other markers for a range of syndromes. My understanding is that cpcs are a very common finding and you have less to worry about if the ultrasound hasn't picked up other abnormalities. They usually disappear and are likely to be just a natural variation. The only way to be 100% sure howevre is to have an amnio.

My baby had an echogenic cardiac foci which is a weak marker for downs so after much stress and worry she was born perfect. I found the cpc excellent and a great comfort.

Good luck

I feel ya :hugs:
After my 18 week scan I too read those results & looked it up and could not stop crying, I had a Dr friend at the hospital so I called him straight away & he went to see the Ob and have a chat with him for me. The answer was "Don't Stress" but i had been for 5 hrs, he said they normally go away which is why they do a follow up scan at about 22 weeks(for me) I think they like to wait about 4-6 weeks after the last scan but I could not wait any longer  Anyway he said they are only considered to be serious if you have had a higher risk of abnormality result on your 12 or 18 week scan.
Anyway no-one seemed to be worried about the results except me, so I went for another scan 4 weeks later and all was clear :smiliedance: And I now have a 22 mth perfectly healthy DD
Good Luck to you & maybe go see your GP with the results as he will put your mind at ease(as mine did) I found the info on the internet to be quite scarey & had it better explained by a professional.
Hope I have helped you :hugs:

Howdy
I wouldnt be too concerned, truley, for edwards, when they do ultrasounds, they dont really worry about either edwards, or downs unless there is 3 "markers", choroid plexus cysts are only one of them, others are thickening of the back of the neck, the length of the limbs, echogenic heart, genital size in boys, etc etc, you can get an amnio done, which will rule out these 2 terrible conditions, but with only the cysts, it is nothing to worry about. I hope I am laying your mind at rest here, there are heaps of kids with the cysts shown on U/s, 2 of my kids had them, and they have NEVER been a problem, my DS had 3 markers, and we have a healthyish child now, but his problems are NO WAY related to the cysts, there has never been a reported case of a cyst being at any way damaging.

I know you are freaking out, it is hard not to, but read the above, and it will ease your mind babe!

Thanks everyone,

I went to the Doc's yesterday who told me they were quite common and I am having a follow up scan at 34 weeks to make sure they have gone away. So I'll get to see my little man again.
