Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has been able to get thier hands on SMA formula for newborns  I'm wanting to change bubby from S-26 Gold to SMA due to cost reasons plus there's not much difference in nutrition between them both. I also found that my other bubbies settled easier being on SMA.

Does anyone know if SMA is off the market ???? I hope not !!! :banghead:

(Wasn't too sure where to put this thread, sorry.)

I used to use SMA but haven't bought it for well over a year and haven't been paying attention to the shelves of formula at the shops.

You could try phoning Wyeth to ask. They also make S26 so you can use the phone number off of that tin.

From what I understood from your question, you want to know if there is a Newborn or "step 1" (usually 0-6 months) SMA. There isn't. (If this wasn't the intent of your question; disregard the following info).

SMA only comes in the one age from 0-12 months. This is because it is Casein Dominant as opposed to Whey Dominant (like most other formulas). I am not sure why this effects the age of how the babies that can drink it as Casein is harder to break down a recommended for "hungrier babies". I have never used SMA, but this is what I have heard. So this means that whatever SMA tin you are seeing; your baby can have it from birth to 12 months.

Because you're changing from a light (whey dominant) protein formula over to a heavier (casein dominant) formula, you may want to wean bub over slowly.

If you give one morning bottle of SMA, the rest of the day as your normal Gold - do that for 2 days, then increase to 2 morning bottles of SMA (on the 3rd day), do that for 2 days then increase to 3 morning SMA bottles and so on....that way you can keep an eye on your bub all day after the first SMA bottle, make sure there are no allergies and their little tummy also has time to adjust to the heavier protein. You may see some changes in stools which is common when you change formula, a small amount of cool boiled water is good after a milk feed to keep bub hydrated and stools soft.

I think the SMA can be used from birth onwards - there is no step 2 or step 3, just one formula all the way through.

Hope this helps...:)
