We have a beautiful orange tree in our backyard that is full of gorgeous looking oranges atm, but they are all rather sour. They are all just going to waste and it seems such a shame. Any ideas on what I can do with at least some of them?

Make marmalade? Or bake (and freeze) orange flavoured cakes, muffins etc?

Maybe use them in some kind of home remedy way to make scrubs and body washes??

Give them to Beany.

She eats raw limes. With salt.

Marmelade, orange butter, orange cake, orange cordial.

Make old fashioned pomanders, by pressing cloves into them - or better still, get the kids to do it.

What is a pomander?

It is just a fragrant decoration I think!;)

If you press cloves all over an orange, the orange will dry out, not go mouldy. It will also smell fabulous, and you can put it in your drawers, wardrobe, linen cupboard etc.

I did read somewhere that underplanting your orange tree with Lavender will make the fruit sweeter, too. Might be worth a try to improve the fruit in coming years.

Orange sherbert or gelato? Or maybe look for recipes that use the orange zest which may be the same even if the juice/flesh inside is sour.

Thankyou everyone!!
I love the idea of pressing the cloves into an orange and making everything smell delicious, and will definetly be trying the lavender thing
but Im curious, with all these delicious things you can make, does it matter that the oranges are sour? How do you combat that when using them in a recipe?

Most of the ideas suggested are sweet, so the sugar will counteract the tartness of the fruit.

Most cake recipes etc just use the rind and some of the juice so the tartness wont matter too much particularly as the sugar content in the cake will combat this.
As someone else mentioned.. marmalade would be a good idea, you have to put loads of sugar in marmalade anyway, so it wont matter if the oranges are sour!!

beany - Lime's with salt???? Is that the Claytons tequila slammer??? Dont worry ol' gal you will be able to have tequila with it in a few more weeks lol!!

Wasting a perfectly good lime by watering it down with alcohol? I think not :p

I cut them into segments, sprinkle the segments with salt and munch away contentedly as everyone around me collapses with strange looks on their faces.

We have the same problem, there are heaps of oranges on our orange tree but they are all sour and yuck, most of them end up all over the ground even the birds don't like them.

Hey coops, just remember if you make pomanders... roll them in orrice root powder (you can add cinamon and allspice to the mix too for fragrance) as this will help preserve the orange.

If you made them now they might even have shrunk enough to close all the gaps by Christmas! My mum's is 80 years old and the size of a cumquat :p

Unfortunately Erin you may have a sour variety on your hands by the sounds of it :(
Can you believe their are sweet varieties & sour ... Go figure !!!!
We had a sour variety growing up also so it was mainly used for marmalades or compost lol.
But i would definately try out the other recipes it cant hurt especially when there is enough sugar in them.

I have the same thing!

We have an orange and a lemon tree, the lemons we use for cooking etc.
But DD uses the oranges as balls!
(at least i think they are oranges, how do i tell them apart from madarines??)
But i will definately use them in some cooking now!

What about muffins???

Mel - Im sure the muffins would be fine ... You can tell if they are oranges by their shape totally round for oranges or if they are mandarins they look like a squashed orange so to speak plus if you cut them open you will know
