View Full Version : Sore hips esp at night?
Hi Guys,
Just wondering if anyone has tips for overcoming reeeally sore hips? They are so achy at night that they keep waking me up so I can turn over... I've tried a pillow between my knees, but this doesn't seem to work at all! :(
Anyone have any suggestions? From what the books say it seems to be a fairly common complaint but I'd love to be able to get comfy in bed.
They have now started aching through the day too while I'm sitting at work. I suppose you can't expect to get through pregnancy discomfort-free but I thought there might be a few home remedies & suggestions from some experienced mums out there.
Bec.
Osteopathy or chiro and massage.
Its your sacroilliac joints letting the side down because the ligaments are stretching and softening to allow the pelvis to widen.
Nice warm bath, massage from hubby and a couple of panadol. It will still hurt, but not as much.
Bec i get this heaps and it's awful! I find that a heat pack gives me relief but haven't found a way to prevent it yet...
We don't have a bath! Whenever we visit anyone who does I always hop in as it's so nice and relaxing for all those sore bits!
Osteo, chiro & all that stuff, there's noone in our town who will do it during pregnancy, I'd have to run yet another trip into Canberra. Might ask my OB next time.
Last night I tried a pillow next to me, propping up the bump and resting my top leg on it. The hips didn't seem so bad last night so I might try again tonight.
My partner has been rubbing them for me, it's lovely but only while it lasts!

Just relating my own similar experiences. Went to my physio after my midwife said it was probably pelvic pain. Physio explained there are two types of pregnancy hip pain. One is internal, in the bones and joints, quite a deep pain, usually caused by the pelvic instability and all that the other posts have offered advice on.
The physio then got me to lie on my side and pushed in around my hip joint and asked me to describe the pain. It was a local pain, not in the bones but more of a pain in the tissues. This type of pain, my physio said, was an inflammation. Apparently we all have a bit of fluid around our hip joint, but in pregnancy this can become inflammed.
Treatments: ice (gosh no, not in this weather!), pillow between the knees (very helpful), and "eggshell foam". This foam (available from Clarke Rubber) has been a great relief. It is shaped like an egg carton and you put it under your sheet and it relieves the pressure on your hip. You can get huge bed-sized sheets of it, but it's a bit pricey, so I just got a piece big enough for my needs.
Hope this helps.

Funny, I was just reading about this this morning, as I've a similar problem with lower back pain and my right leg/hip! Check out this link:

I use pillows between my knees, or with one knee resting on it and wedging it under the bump. Works well but it's like there's 4 in the bed, between husband, pillow, bump and me lol
Our bed is the same Seekrit, pillow between the knees, another wedge shape one under the bump plus a couple of heat packs on my back.
I get it all sorted out how I want it and then I have to get up and go to the loo...
Thanks for the tips everyone.
I've found in the last couple of nights that the pillow next to me with one knee and the bump resting on it is the goods. But it is getting a bit squashy in the bed with me, three pillows (the other one chocks me up to avoid heartburn) and DP... I have to keep shoving him over to make room for me and all the pillows!
I have read a lot about SPD, my symptoms don't sound like that. It's not a sharp clicky pain, just a general ache around my hip bones. I refer to it as my "nanna hips" :o
I have also been trying to get up and walk around every half hour at my desk, that seems to make my lower back feel a bit better.
i hear you with this!! i'm 36 weeks pregnant next tuesday and today I got out of bed COMPLETELY over it! I can't sleep properly at night and haven't been able to for weeks and weeks now. Probably almost 10 weeks!!! If not longer. The pain in my hips is unbearable. Now its combined with baby growing in the rib cage area and even a full bladder hurts. So getting out of bed with EXTREMELY painful hips, not being able to breathe properly and an excrutiatingly full bladder every hour or so, I've had enough!!
The maternity belt I've got from the hospital physio is useless and pillows dont help, nor do baths or hot showers. I tell you, all I can say is that I hope this baby comes a week or two early (I know that sounds bad) because I can't handle this pain anymore!
Hi, I did find that one of those body pillows was helpful, they are like a very long pillow and take up less spcae than 3 pillows at once (normal pillows were too big for me). Iused to lie on my side with it between my arms, under bump and between legs. I got good at rolling over with it, all in one go! It was about $20 from Pillow Talk I think
Sue
Hi sue,
I looked at the body pillows but the one I use at the moment is really thin, the thick ones aren't comfy for me. So the body pillow is a bit big for me. I only have to roll with one pillow as the other two are under my head!
