As lots of you will know my DS is a nightmare day sleeper but has always been great at night. Self settles with absolutely no fuss, sleeps, wakes for milk, sleeps again etc.
Last three night he has woken after precisely 1 hour of going to bed with a scream. Quick cuddle and he has been back in his cot asleep for a nice long stretch. It is actually like he is not fully awake - he cries in his cot, patting and shushing don't settle him, but I pick him up and he flops on my shoulder for a cuddle and is instantly asleep.

He is 5mo this week. Whenever a good pattern emerges I always say it has to be three consecutive days to consider it to be more than luck, so we have now had three consecutive nights of this strange waking.

Any ideas?

Hi Kar!

No advice from me coz L is doing the exact same thing. At 1st we thought she might be having a bad dream but she does it every night without fail. As soon as I go in and put her dummy in she's fine, sometimes she doesn't even spit the dummy out she just wakes up crying. I have no idea why but it's been happening for about 2 weeks now....

I think these babies of ours just like to keep us on our toes and think it's fun to confuse us....LOL

I have an idea, well my GP does but i don't think it has scientific evidence :detective:

What he believes is that babies change there sleep patterns right before they reach there milestones like rolling, crawling, walking etc.

Seems true with my kids. My bub was a terrible sleeper, but is improving now she walks, sleeping longer etc.

The only other thing it could be is wind or maybe teeth.

Are you breastfeeding? If so are you eating something different? To cause wind or anything?

Dunno really, just throwing some ideas out there! Babies are often unpredictable little things!

thanks ladies. JJ, I had thought about the development thing too. F always goes crazy for about 4 days before learning a new trick. Usually it is that his days get even worse, but maybe he is giving me a break this time and just doing this odd little brief wake up.

not eating anything different, he has started eating proper solids and the proper poos seem to be bothering him a bit, but i don't think that is it - he doesn't do a fart or anything when i hop him up for a cuddle.

think the development thing is most likely. argh, given his nights are so predictable i have arranged to go out for dinner on sunday night with a friend and take F in his pram (have done this successfully before) but think we will have to wait until after the squeak if it is still happening for the next couple of nights.
