View Full Version : Specific Help for Setting up for MCN's - full time use from Newborn
Hi Everyone
I'm hoping to draw on some expertise, experience and recommendations from you all.
We're going to use MCN's from newborn right through and I want to start purchasing what I'll need to start soon.
I already have a small snap in (ITTI BITTI) and a medium all in one (ITTI BITTI) and I think it's called an all in one from Bumgenius in a very small newborn size. All purchased from the expo.
Hubby and I really like the idea of an 'all in one' with a booster option for some of them. And are not a fan of the pocket styles for regular use (one offs for pretty materials or as a back up will be okay).
SO how many do we buy and in what sizes and what brands to get us going?!
What did you use on your newborns that lasted through until they were a bit older?
AND do they really contain those newborn explosions?
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post
We didn't start using MCNs until DD was 6 months, but my sister has been using cloth on her little girl since about 3 weeks. She is using mainly itti bittis, but i think it depends very much on the size of your bub as to what will fit.
Thanks Teegzie.
I think for the first few weeks we'll probably use a combination of sposies and cloth - really as a just in case and getting used to the cloth.
I just have no idea on where to start!
I've found cushie tushies which do a similar style to itti bitti, and I've started a spreadsheet to keep track of all the brands and what style they are!
My DS is 8 weeks and around 3.7kgs & I'm using a mix of fitteds & AIO's.
I also use cloth on my 14mth old, but didn't start till he was around a few months.
I hated the idea of a fitted with a cover, but since using them, I love them. I find they work so well, & you have the added protection of the cover. I use thirsties covers which has a gusset on the leg to help keep everything in & so far, so good
For fitteds I have kissaluvs, fluffestuff, raphaels & lushies.
So far for my AIO/2's I have bumgenius, bubblebubs, fluffestuff, genesa forge & cgr. I also have a beetlebums coming which I can't wait to try.
The best suggestion I can give you is to get a few different brands to try. This can be a bit of a pain, especially if you want to have everything ready when bub is born, but if you buy a heap of 1 sort, it may not suit your bubs shape & then it will be a waste of money. My other suggestion is if you're able to, is to put a little money away each week, so when you find what works best, you can just order more straight away.

Thanks Kotakai - a fitted nappy is an all in one without a waterproof outer is that correct? so you need the additional cover to stop the wetness coming through?
I'm certainly not going to buy all of one type :) :smiliedance: i like to share myself around. I will look at the websites for each of the brands you use.
Can you still use the fitteds as the baby gets older or are they a sized nappy?

Yep that's right about a fitted.
The ones I have are sized ones, I 'think' they all are like that. But in saying that, they're all still on almost the tightest setting, so they're going to last him a while.

Hey, I'm in the same position as you!!! i can't speak from experience just from what I have read!
I would stear clear of cushie tushies, I have heard some bad things about them as well as Peapods.
I have started with Bambooty smalls (got them in the mail last week). They sometimes have a buy one, get one free special. They look fantastic and I have read some great reviews about them. Not really knowing much about MCN's and sizing but they look small enough from a newborn.
I ordered some itt bitti snap ins and BBH minkee magicals but haven't received them in the mail yet. I have heard that the small size of both should fit a newborn.
For pockets I have purchased some green kids but also haven't received them yet. I have heard good things about fitteds but I don't think I will be using them personally.
I have heard the bubblebubs are great and do a newborn size. They are my next purchase :)!!!
Please correct me if I have given out wrong info, I'm new to the world of MCNs :o
I'm also curious about poosplosion (spelling ??) and AIOs!!!!

YAY springbubba someone who's in the same position I'm in!
Can I ask what bad things you've heard about the cushie tushies? I really liked the look of them - pea pods I'd already gone off after seeing them at expo.
I'm not so sure on the fitteds either because of the need for a separate cover - I'm really looking for a true sposie alternative, put it on take it off, throw it in the wash instead of the bin - same reason im not a huge fan of pockets.
I think im going to get a couple more bumgenius all in ones - I have a small one from the expo and they're just upgrading them now to add a pocket for a booster if you need it.
poosplosion is my 'worst nightmare' too and thats one of the reasons I'm trying to work out where to start for a bubba - so I can avoid it if I can!
:ecomcity: oh long post... gotta love 'em :)

im in the same boat... bubs is due oct and i want to start in cloth from the start
i have decided to use some cheap chinese prefolds for the first couple of weeks so i dont have to spend money on small MCN's... i just cant justify the cost of a set up when it seems they wont be in them for very long... and that way i can see which type fits bubs the best etc. im hoping for IB's as i think they are so cure and by far my fav ;)
i agree with the CT's. I have two sitting at my house and without having even been used i think they dont look well made or anywhere near as nice as my IB's and BBH's.
after doing some research today i think ill purchase a trial of baby beehinds and bambooty's next. but i'm sure ive still got plenty of brands to weedle through.
the more I look and see that newborns need that smaller sizing I think I'll be using cloth part time for the first few weeks so I'll get a few nappies that will fit newborn and then a bit older but not any specifically for newborn.
if you're doing the same foot work I am on this I'd recommend an excel spread sheet to keep a tab on what you've looked at what brand makes what!

I did MCN from nappy dot!
The nappies I would recommend are CK Raphaels, Thirsties and Kissaluvs. You can also boost these so they absorb more, but I wasn't too fazed, I rather changing them as bubs skin was new and fresh and I didn't want him sitting in pee for hours iykwim.
They are all fitted nappies though, so they need covers. My favourite was the Thirsties as they had the gussets, so if a pooplosion did outrun the nappy, the cover got it. Second best was a bummis cover, but on skinny legs sometimes they leak poo!
I tried a few AIO's but I wasn't too impressed by them. Bubblebubs was probably the best of them, but even then wasn't completely ideal.
A good old terry flat, although bulky was also a good option as well.
My nappies/covers started in the newborn size and the progressed up to small through to large.
I found the OSFM nappies didn't really fit right until bubs was on the almost grown out of smaal size end of the smalls.
Some nappies do suit different bubs better/worse than others. eg My first son ittis fit well, my second son not so much, they are both completely different builds though.
As to how many to buy, I found I used 25-30 in 1.5-2 days. Washing then, having a few left while drying.

My twinnies have been in cloth since we got home from hospy. We LOVE itti bitti fitteds (bitti boo's) with a thirsties cover -XS cover over a small nappy is a perfect fit! I found that both bubbas would wet through a cushie tushie, so they are not good for us now bubs are 2months old. Bubs are sleeping a bit longer at night now, so the fitted itt's are good for that too! Although I might have to start using the small baby beehind covers or small thirsties with a baby beehind bamboo booster! The thirsties covers are great as they have a gusset to catch poo-xplosions!
Then I use itti bitti AIO, or bubblebubs when we go out, just so it's a bit easier than packing covers and not beng able to allow them to dry.
I know they are not as economical as a OSFA, but we used greenkids with DD and LOVED them, but they didn't fit well on DS, so went out and bought itti's for him, so different nappies siut different babies.

I have heard that cushie tushies leak and wick and that the quality of the nappy is well below par. Just search cushie tushie and there is loads of people that are unhappy with them (a shame really as they are so cute:yes:).
If you have time wait and see if there are any specials with Bambooty as there has been two in the last two months. Someone starts a thread every month and people post where they have seen specials, it is sssoooo handy. I would also subscribe to their newsletters as well so you get informed about the specials.
I'm starting with 20 nappies (about 5 different kinds) and seeing how it goes. I figure that some may not work and they will grow out of the smalls quickly but still far cheaper than disposables! Also, hoping to have more babies that will get extra use.
Most people are recommending fitted for newborns but I will see how the AIOs go and might change my mind when no. 2 comes along :laughing:

I started using cloth when DS was 2 or 3 weeks old. I had a tiny stash which I added to over the weeks, and a friend loaned me heaps of her MCN to use.
I really liked Bubblebubs. Their newborn size is seriously tiny, and DS fit the smalls from birth, so I wouldn't recommend stocking up on their NB size.
Itti Bitti fitteds fit really welll from birth too. I started using Itti Bitti D'lish from about 1 or 2 months, so don't have any newborn experience with them.
Bumgenius AIOs are fantastic. Again, the newborn size is seriously tiny, so stock up on smalls. I started using their one size nappies when DS was about 2 months and have been using them since. They're awesome.
Kissaluv fitteds in size 0 are probably the best newborn fitted I've seen. Great fit and absorbent and not too pricey.
I tried some cheaper brands as well. Cheeky Butts were quite cheap and worked okay, but they haven't held up to frequent washing as well as the others. They were okay as a stash filler.
Have fun! I recommend you go to a site that stocks heaps of different brands, like Nurture Nappies or The Wee Wuns. I always trawl through the specials section and try nappies out that way.
