View Full Version : We have just decided to keep our kids home for the next 2 weeks....
....due to HUGE amounts of swine flu and whooping cough in the area. My DH is worried and he is the one who has a calm head on his shoulders in this family, lol.

They should be able to give you some stuff to keep the kids up to date with the others.
I'd be doing the same if there were the same risks here.
Thanks, yeah....I said to hubby, just like homeschooling :)

If there were large amounts of swine flu in the area and it was a small town, I'd be inclined to aswell. :hugs: Hope you don't get too bored cooped up in the house though.
It is a hard one! How many people are in that town? I have to say I would actually prefer to not let them go to daycare/school if there is high numbers of swine flu cases in my area.
Good luck
i think you guys should do what you think is right for the littlies. if it means keeping them home then, thats what you should. i know dw and i would be discussing the same thing if we were in a similar situation.
Thanks Awwdad....I never thought we would feel this way....but I can just imagine them getting swine flu AND whooping cough :( gaawshhhh.

I would too if I was you  (if I could)
Well, glad we aren't the only ones who feel this way.
We informed the kids, and they weren't too disappointed.....lol ;)
Any teacher who doesnt supply you with work for the kiddies is a BAD teacher! :p But seriously if this happens go see the principal. And ask for something more then readers and workbooks! Ask what she/he will be actually teaching over the next two weeks so you can do it at home.
Find out what Math concepts (fractions, measurement etc) she will be teaching.
Find out what english genre she is teaching.
HTH! :)
Oh and I think you are doing the right thing! Espesh since schools arent closing down anymore!
Thanks Amy. :) I wonder what they will give my prep boy to do?
I heard they weren't closing schools down anymore....could they stilll though?
They should still be investigating early math concepts in Prep. Ask the Prep teacher what else she has planned. I know our Prep teacher is introducing phonics and letter recognation each week. So maybe see if the teacher does this and if so what letters/phonic sounds they are focusing on.
I dont think they will close down schools anymore. Not unless Edu Qld of Cath Ed change their minds. Each principal is directed to do whatever their governing body says so I dont see principals just deciding to shut their schools on a case by case basis!
Its all a bit scary tho! My DP's house mate was on Tamiflu and I was there on the weekend. I dont think she has Swine Flu but the Drs are certainly handing out the drugs for it like lollies so it must mean they are being extra careful!
as far as i know, they are not closing schools anymore
but we will be withdrawing my DD if there are cases locally. we have a small bub and a pregnant woman in the house, so that means we have a pretty high risk factor. Homeschooling for a few weeks would sound fab to me :)

I think it won't do them any harm at all to stay home and is not at all an overreaction. Two weeks won't hurt them in terms of their schooling at all, and well, health is more important. I bet they're not too unhappy about it, either! :D

Prep in Vic - DD is currently learning the Magic 100 Words (http://pegsnet.pegs.vic.edu.au/public/jsboys/year1/odie/magic100words.htm), ummm I can check out the rest tomorrow and PM you if you like...
Yep, health is more important at this stage.....I love the idea of having them home with me for another couple of weeks anyway :goodvibes:
Thanks WCM. I spend quite a bit of time in the prep classroom so I do know kinda what they do....maybe she will be able to give me some printouts etc and let me know what letter they will be working on next etc.

i think its a great idea if you feel its around the schools etc:yes:
my sister might possible have swine flu at the moment/or normal flu
so im currently locked in my room and im going back to my brisbane house today
:fingerscrossed: i dont catch it
For sure, especially if you have a member of your family that has an underlining medical issue...
People are fobbing swine flu off saying it is no worse then a normal flu... I changed my mind about that when I took DD to the Doctors on Saturday and they had a big sign and masks to put on... I have never seen that before..
Hope you don't have it Ezza and that your sis is OK.
