I met a lady who is a single mum on the pension and has really bad teeth I want to help her and have heard of certain dentists that offer cheap dentistry to pensioners.. ? is this true? Does anyone know how to find them?

Get her to contact the Dental Heath "board" in the state in which she lives they will be able to refer her to someone in her immediate area that will be able to assist her based on her pension concession card:yes:

The dental hospital in South Brisbane offers free dental care to pensioners, but the waiting lists are horrendous (upto 2 years) for non urgent work. Urgent work will be undertaken as needed.

I should recommend getting on their list anyway, for future dental care.

The best thing is to phone around some dentists and ask, they vary in cost quite dramatically.

Try George Nichols in West End. I know he's reasonable.

In Queensland (Im guessing thats where she is) most public hospitals offer a 'reduced rate/free' service to people holding a concession/pension card.
The only catch is that it is done through the emergency centre and you have to be there at some stupid hour in the morning to line up and wait and theres no gurantee you will get in - UNLESS you are in pain!

As the above girl mentioned - there should be also a number of clinics that do reduced rates as they do in other states.. I cant remember the actual dental services name.. but if you rang a local 'community Health' centre - they would definately be able to tell you.

I really wouldn't recommend turning up to Emergency departments, unless you have something like a big abscess, and even then you may be sent off to a dentist +/- antibiotics, because ultimately it's dental treatment that's required.

Sorry - to clarify - I didnt mean the emergency department in the hospitals.. I meant that some public hospitals offer a public dental service... but it is run early in the morning and is on a first come first serve basis.

I know for a fact that the Nambour public hospital does one.. and that some others in Brisy do as well.

(thanks for pointing out that I didnt make clear sense lol)

i used to work for dentist at indooroopilly Dr Floria Farhadi and she is the cheapest one around that i have seen. she doesn't really give a discount for pensioners but has reasonable rates for everyone. she will also sit down and discuss what needs to be done and what can wait. she does great payment plans where you pay bits off until you have most of it paid then she does the work. also if you work it to get most of the work done in a financial year then you can claim it back on your tax. she is also really gentle and good for people with phobias of dentists.
