View Full Version : What age can I start giving tap water?
As opposed to boiled water? He has had little sips of tap water when he has stolen a freind sippy cup numerous times, but I still give him boiled water with his meals? Can I stop doing this? If not, at what age?
Thanks :)
I would never give a person tap water unless they were dead. So many ickys in there!
Get a water filter:thumbsup:. You'll feel healthier so much !

It depends on where you live. I live in adelaide and our tap water is brilliant. I give it to DD and DS from 6 months.:)
I gave my ds tap water (in Melbourne) from about 9 months of age. If were away somewhere that had tank water or a different sort of water supply, then it was definitely boiled first (and that went for our drinking water too) ... or I used bottled water.

My kids didn't have tap water until after 12 months, it will be the same now with DD2. I think this is generally the recommendation.
We live in melbourne. I have a water filter in our fridge (you know those water/ice dispenser fandangle things). Maybe i'll just wait till 12 months then? hmmm
The general "rule" is 12mths. But i agree that a water filter would be a good idea, unless you live where i do and its natural spring water from the mountain. :)

I would say over 12 month I think i was still giving Keiara tap water till 14 months.
You boil the water for the bottle until 12 months so why give them tap water for a drink?
Also kids need tap water, bottled water doesn't have fluoride and thats what keeps their teeth nice and strong. I always gave Keiara bottled water after I stopped boiling it but the dentist and doctors all told me that was a really bad idea.

:eek:Well what they told you is BS, to put it in nice terms. The whole point of getting the filtered water for us was the fluoride. That is for toothpaste is for! Fluoride is good for your teeth, but a toxin for your body. Even the guy who discovered fluoride was good for your teeth said that.

Just watch cause most filters don't filter the flouride out!!!
We have one of the on the bench thingos and love it but it doesn't filter the flouride (which is one of the things I like about it - I grew up in NZ for the first 9 yrs and had flouride in our water but when we moved to Qld the water didn't but the dentists always commented on how good our teeth were!)
Oops OT - I think 12 months sounds about right though.
I think I started at 9 months, but I think they recommend 12 months.
Our MCHN said yesterday that from about 5 - 6mth just bringing the water to the boil in the kettle is fine, don't need to boil it for 5 minutes.

 I have always done this anyway?! Never knew it had to be boiled for 5 minutes?! oops

we waited until around 11mths. We're in melbourne and give her tap water
 Well, obviously the boiling wasn't necessary!
I should say her response that just brought to the boil was fine was after I asked if we still needed to boil for 5 mins, she may have just been being nice saying didn't have to anymore when really you never did have to!
never tap water. filtered if you can and rainwater if you can. I love the taste of rainwater.

it depends on your water quality. just bringing ti to the boil wont kill off giadia, something that Sydneys water system was exposed to about 6 years ago. Boiling it for 5 mins will.
I think that it also depends on the air pressure. low preassure area can cause your water to boil at a much lower temprature. i remember going to the blue mountains once and boiling a cuppa. the water was boiling but you could put your hand in it and feel that it was only just warm!
from 5 - 6 months. Australian water is clean and high quality.

 I have always just boiled it in the kettle. DD2 is 11 weeks, should I just keep doing what I've been doing or start boiling it for 5 minutes?

I'd probably give it at 12 months and older.
I worked in a childcare nursery and we gave cooled boiled water to the babies until 2 years old and then filtered tap water was okay for the older children.
But, I think they're generally a bit more careful in childcare centres because of the duty of care.
I'd give it, if it gives them an upset tummy or anything, switch back to boiling.

Boiling for 4-5 minutes will kill pretty much all the germs in the water, whereas bringing it to the boil will kill some, but not as much I think.
Its your call if you keep doing what your doing, or start boiling for longer. If I couldn't be bothered I'd boil the kettle, wait until it stops making boiling noises and then boil it again.
That'll do, yeah?

I'm onto FF bub #3 and have only ever boiled the kettle. Sometimes it gets an extra flick on, but generally just one boil. I was never told anything else :)

:confused:Yeah, that's what I was saying.....bottled water has fluoride in it usually.....hence why filtered water is the way to go.
DD is threeyears we filter and boil then cool, alternative to that we use the sterile water at from the hospital pharmacy, It takes no energy at all to boil the kettle none at all so its no hard ship

I have never filtered my/our water and I dont plan on starting. I think thats is one of the reasons so many people get sick these days because they filter the water  A persons body needs at least some bad gems to help build their immune system. Maybe this is why I dont get sick, well thats what Im putting it down to.
