We ran out of nappies and guess what.....?

DD (aged 3.5) approches me yesterday and tells me that she urgently needs to do a poo and to please put a nappy on her. (as usual)
When I go to get the nappy, I notice that we've run out.:eek: :confused:

So I calmly bring the potty into dd's room (which is where she wants to be when she does a poo in her nappy) and tell her that I'm sorry but there are no more nappies today and if she does a poo in the potty, we can quickly go buy some more.
I don't give her any time to answer and encourage her to sit down.
I quickly exit the room and hope for the best. It's been about a minute and I didn't think she'd still be sitting there, but I can hear her saying something like " Oooh it did come out" :laughing:
I peer in through the side of the door and I can see her sitting back down now in full determination.
Could this be it? I say to myself
One minute later she comes out of the room, with a cheeky grin and looking very proud of herself. "Mummy I did it!"
Since yesterday we have progressed to singing a "Yes I can do a poo in the potty" kind of song that we made up & and there have been more poos in the potty as well. (Hooray!)
She has almost forgotten about the nappies and she's now reminding me of how I promised her that we'd go to the swimming pool when she does a poo in the potty.
That's where we are going tomorrow.

My DD has lots of plain ario knickers but LOVES her Pony Knicks!

Thats fantastic, congrats to your little girl. My Ds is just about to turn three, refuses to do a poo on the toilet and also brings a nappy to me when he needs to do one. Recently he has been holding on until I put his night nappy on which is very frustrating. I don't think I will be able to poo train him until we get rid of the night nappy. Do you think a potty would be a better transition for poo rather than the toilet?

Toilets can be a bit overwhelming for some kids.
I think that a potty in some cases can make them feel like they have more control over what's happening, since there's no flush and sudden disappearance of what they've produced.

Today when she pooed in the potty, dd called me to see the progress and after I had encouraged her effort, I told her that I would now flush the poo down the toilet- she became alarmed for some reason and so I asked her if she'd like to tip it into the toilet herself.
She was happy with that as it gave her more control over the situation.
We have an insert for the toilet, which she has used before for weeing. so I'll start suggesting using this very soon.
If you're thinking of buying a potty for your ds, you might consider showing him a choice of two pottys and ask if he'd like to choose one to take home. That way he might feel as if he's got some control of the situation.
