I think I'm getting nipple thrush for the 3rd time. Things have been good for weeks now, but I'm starting to get the stabbing pains and itchy nipple again.

It took so long to clear up the previous times, and then I overcame supply problems. I just want to cry. This might be the final straw for us and breastfeeding:crying:

Sorry, just needed to share

I'm so sorry- thanks for sharing! I hope that whatever the problem is it clears up quickly. Have you tried going to a natropath for advice on how to keep it clear? I think there's some foods that can encourage thrush- don't know what they are- maybe sugar is one...

hope it all works out for you

I had nipple thrush on and off for about 3-4 months... If it wasnt me that had it, then DS had it...

Try cutting down on or cut out yeast products and high sugar foods... My MCH nurse told me to stop eating things like breads, vegemite (which I was having everyday) while I had symptoms of thrush... apparently, the thrush thrives on these things...

Change your breastpad regularly and make sure you are treating both yourself and bubs (which you probably already know anyway)

All the best

PS - I am still feeding DS and he is 13.5 months old... the thrush will go away and your can enjoy the wonderful feeding experience (If thats what you want)

Hi,
You can take diflucan one while breastfeeding, its in the RWH melb protocol for treatment of Thrush in Breastfeeding(along with the other things already mentioned by others in this thread:thumbsup: ). Its important to knock it off early as its really hard to combat if it gets into your breast.

Another thing is Coconut oil (from the health food shop) my sister used this on the advice of her LC to rid herself of recurrent bouts.

Great tips gals. thanks.

If I'm honest, I need to address my sugar intake issues :D

Not so sore today, maybe it won't get worse. :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: Actually I might just do the Diflucan before it goes pear shaped anyway.

:hugs: Ouch! I hope the diflucan does the trick for you and you get some relief, cutting the trigger foods will help a lot too. Hope your feeling better soon!

Well it looks like it is thrush:banghead:

I took Diflucan today, and started my poor DD back on Daktarin oral gel. She's eaten 2 tubes of this since she was born. Mushrooms will wither in her presence;)

Nipple cream, fresh breast pads, bras, eating & drinkingless sugar, washing with bicarb of soda. Anything I've left out???

P****d off:thumbsdown:

Change your towel everyday, afer doing your washing hang it in the sun. Consider using an antifungal washing detergant. Sterilise anything bub uses to suck, like toys ect (weak bleach and hot water wash and sun dry)

The virgin coconut oil really helped my sister.

I second changing towels every day...anything that touches your nipples shouldn't be worn more than the one time, wash them in hot water, hang out to dry. And anything that your baby sucks on.
If you express you have to pump and dump, you can't keep the milk cause when you give it to bubs your thrush cycle will start again. kellymom (breastfeeding site) says it's ok to keep it because it won't always mean a re-occurence but if you are having trouble I wouldn't.

Put the Daktarin on your nipples too...it makes them feel heaps better and helps get rid of your thrush as well. Continue the treatment for two full weeks (you'll need to buy more Daktarin), even though the symptoms are gone doesn't mean the thrush has.

Go to a health shop and get some acidophillus (sp?) pills. They will be in the fridge. Take them every day as a prevention.

Thank you again ladies. I'd forgotten about the dummies. Might be time for them to go anyway.

It's awful throwing away expressed milk, I have to store it for my days at work, and I was trying to build a supply (very very slowly as it happens). What a waste.:thumbsdown:

Acidophilus, will get. Never heard of virgin coconut oil. Where would I track that down? And when/how do you use it? Welcome back greasy nipples.....

Unfortunately daktarin oral gel irritates my nipples making them even more itchy so I have to use the cream, which means I have to wash it off before a feed. Feed times are getting pretty chilly now, not to mention quite a drama.

Oh well. Chin up, shoulders back, boobs out;)

I have a recipe for oatmeal cookies that are great for increasing milk supply. There a little $$$ to make but I know heaps of people that have had success with them. I have a freezer full of frozen bm thanks to the recipe. I eat about 5 cookies before bed and get up and pump before DD wakes up and get a sufficient amount.

Here's the recipe (they are yummy too! And I just divide the batter and freeze the extra cause it makes stacks of cookies).

1 cup butter or marg
* 1 cup sugar
* 1 cup brown sugar
* 4 tablespoons water
* 2 tablespoons flaxseed meal*
* 2 large eggs
* 1 teaspoon vanilla
* 2 cups flour
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 3 cups oats, thick cut if you can get them
* 1 cup or more chocolate chips
* 2 tablespoons of brewers yeast* (be generous)

Preheat oven at 190 degrees F. Mix together 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal and water, set aside for 3-5 minutes. Cream (beat well) margarine and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, mix well. Stir flaxseed mixture and add with vanilla to the margarine mix. Beat until blended. Sift together dry ingredients, except oats and chips. Add to margarine mixture. Stir in oats then chips. Scoop or drop onto baking sheet, preferably lined with parchment or silpat. The dough is a little crumbly, so it helps to use a scoop.

Bake 8-12 minutes, depending on size of cookies.

Serves: 6 dozen cookies

Preparation time: 15 minutes

*can be found at any local health food store. Don't substitute brewer's yeast for anything else... that's what makes 'em work!

There's also a really good site that has tips for thrush....I'll try and find it for you.

:laughing: you dont rub it on your nips (you drink it 30ml each day, its good for supply too and you get from the healthfood shop while your getting the acidophillis).

Mumtoone, you are truly marvellous. I was advised to search for your recipe some time back, and have recommended it to many others. It's yummy. however, I discovered a way to moisten them up a bit - add 1 cup of juicy raisins to the mix, and double the water. Yum yum, love 'em! Mind you I think my sweet tooth has been getting me in trouble with the thrush:o

Goosie - 30ml oil that's a lot of kilojoules! I hope all that oil doesn't make me want to:barf:. I will surely give it a go though.

Ive called a lactation consultant today. I need to get things back on track for going back to work next month. My attachment has never been great either, so we'll need to kill a few birds with one stone......
