View Full Version : This is the way we wash our hands..
This may seem to be a frivolous question, but it is actually something I want to know, mainly to see how many of a 'ew germies' mummy-to-be I'm being or if others are the same.
Basically who washes their hands before/after they change their babies bot-bot?
My aim isn't to have this be a trashy "which way do you wipe" style question, I am genuinely curious.. heh. :)
Cheers!

I wash 'em after...not before though.
O, I definitely have to wash my hands after changing a nappy.
I worry about germs.
Its just like I wash my hands after I go to the toilet.
 I added a poll :D
(for the record, I'm the current other.. I wanted to see the results without clicking 'see results' each time)

I voted "sometimes" becuase there are times when I haven't washed my hands...usually this is when it's a "nothing" nappy IYKWIM
I used to religiously wash by hands before and after when Porsha was a newborn. But I'm not so strict on the before anymore...definately after though
Always! Though not always necessarily with soap and water - most of the time I wipe my hands with a baby wipe. Definitely use soap and water though if I actually get messy hands (thankfully not often!)
I've been eyeing off a product called Aqium which is an antibacterial soap-on-tap that you just squirt on and it dries instantly, so there's no need to rinsing! I was thinking of keeping that on the change table, although the baby-wipe idea seems just as effective (and cheaper?)

when i'm out and about i use that no water handwash. it has a really high metho content and dries on your hands without leaving them sticky. i get a pack of 2 for $2 from a discount store near the pa hospital. you can get different smelling ones (i have green apple, strawberry and original) the original really smells of metho but the others are nice. great for sanitising your hands after a nappy change and you don't have soap and water handy.
it lasts for ages too. i have hardly used 1/2 a little bottle (i think they are 200mls) and i have had the stuff for 10 months now

The aqium sounds good to have....handy in certain circumstances.

I swear by Aquim... because Samuel was sick when he was born and spent time in NICU they are SO STRICT with hand washing and then using "Aquim" type stuff (theirs is pink but the same stuff) now i am wash hands and use Aquim most of the time... when Samuel was little though i was a bit freaky about it
We just had the gastro bug run through the house and i used Aquim constantly !! Never got the bug myself !! :smiliedance:
Looks like Aquim comes highly recommended.
I will have to try it.
Seems ideal especially when you are out.
Put some in the nappy bag, I think.
you can get a large pump bottle and a small travel one (perfect for the nappy bad Kymmy!)

I've only seen it at selected Chemists (Soul Pattinson) here. I bought a large pump pack for $12 or $13 - I've only taken a smidgen off the top & I use it all the time. The small travel pack (that I'll refill from the pump pack) was $3 (rip off!!!).
The only thing I find is my hands are forever dry now, so I have to use a moisturiser also. But it's so convenient by having it at the change table & using it as I walk out of Ethan's bedroom (rather than having to go to the bathroom).

I think that this matter requires basic common sense and personal judgement:idea: :)

Aqium is great stuff - I have a small bottle which I always keep in my handbag - I bought another small bottle and put it into my nappy bag as I can see that it will be really usefull to have at times when soap and water is not readily available.
Seekrit - They sell it at most chemists
As for the change table - I think the wipes sound like a good idea for wiping hands prior to changing nappy. I would still want to use soap and water afterwards. I am a big fan of Dettol Moisture liquid soap - its antibacterial, smells really nice and doesnt leave your hands feeling dry:smiliedance:

I have a 1 litre pump pack of this that sits on the shelf of the change table. Have had it for about 4 months so far and use it everytime before and after I change my daughter and it has hardly made a dent in it so far. It is brilliant and much cheaper in the long run than wasting a nappy wipe. I also have a small bottle in the nappy bag to take with me. My DD was in special care when she was born so I had to wash my hands before and after doing the nappies etc so it just became habit.
Depends If MIL is visiting and is watching me! If she is, I wash before and after, if not, I just wash with a baby wipe afterwards.
i always wash after ive put nappy cream on her, or if ive cleaned poo from her butt.

I'm paranoid now and I wash with soap after every change - I also wipe DD's hands - she always tries to "help". Once I changed a dirty nappy and then went to eat an apple and thought "why does this apple smell like poo?". Anyway, enough said

I put sometimes.... Which means usually!! I always do after poos!! Always. But after wet ones I will usually just use a wipe, sometimes the tap though, depends how full my hands are!! But I do use a wipe. I guess that counts. That Aquim stuff sounds great!! Might have to invest!!
Seekrit I have been looking for that handwash FOREVER where did you see it? I want it!
I was them beforeanmd after I am a hygeine freak amongst other things :D
We use Aqium - on the change table and in the nappy bag. It's great for when you are on your own or in the middle of the night and can't immediately get to wash your hands because you have to be with the baby.
I will always make a run for the soap and water at the first available opportunity after though.

I used the Aquim solution when Ozzy was alot smaller, but now he is bigger and all I have to do is change his nappy and put him down on the floor next to the change table and he is off I don't bother with the solution. I mainly used it because when Ozzy was smaller it would actually be 5 mins later that I would get access to water and soap to wash my hands with.;)
Edited to add: I would buy it from the local pharmacy!
I use Isocol from the superdoopermarket aka woolies:thumbsup: same idea as Aquim but a squirt liquid.
