MJ has developed a really bad cold, the first time she's ever been sick actually & i dont know what to do. She cant sleep :gloomy: everytime she tries to sleep, she starts coughing & choking & wakes up scared because of it. Its scares the life out of DH & I too. I'm always with her so if it gets too bad i sit her up, but is there anything i can do to help her?
We had a vapouriser on all night last night & it did nothing  Should i dress her real warm to "sweat out the cold" or is that just an old wives tale? (It was my mum that suggested that one)
I hate being helpless & not knowing how to help her :(

I wouldn't dress her up to sweat it out - it is too easy for little ones to overheat, and you don't want that.
Are you giving her anything for it? If it is a blocked up nose try the nose sprays (Fess works really well and is just a saline solution). If it is a runny runny nose though I still use the fess and it tends to make any mucous just run out straight away.
Dimetapp can work well for the sinus etc. Unfortunately their is nothing you can give to a child under 2 for a cough though.:(
I would probably be putting baby balsam or vicks on her chest too! As well as on you (you co sleep don't you?) so their is the smell trying to fix up the nose.
Another thing to do is perhaps get a room disenfectant(sp)? You can buy from places like coles a Eucalyptus room disinfectant (sp)? and that may help any germs too!

Poor chicken. My DD is sick atm...I found the vicks baby balsalm good...just to rub on her chest.
And panadol....I don't like dishing ou the panadol but I did find that it helped (a bit) Lots of "mum cuddles" are the best thing though.
I hope MJ feels better soon.

I'll have to get some chest rubs tomorrow if i can get out. Dont have any in the house & i'm wary as i'm really sensative to anything on my skin, i react easily. I do have some eucalyptus oil though, so might put some on a hanky in the pillow as yeah we co-sleep. The cough is really nasty, can hear the congestion even when she laughs. I gave her nurofen yesterday, might give her more tonight with the fess drops, forgot to mention i was using those.
Thanks for all the help guys, i'll give her extra :hugs: too!

My Dr always tells me if they have a bad cold/flu after 2 days and it isn't getting better or is becoming worse when this young bring them in for a checkup;) So perhaps you might want to take MJ in for a checkup!
watch colds with bad congestion as they CAN turn into bronchilitis (and you dont want that). if you can i try to take my coughy kid to the chemist so the chemist can hear the cough and pick the best medicine for your child
Unfortunately their is nothing you can give to a child under 2 for a cough though.:(
I was giving DS medicine to help his coughs before he was 12mths old, so there is definatly stuff available. I always checked with a dr or at least the chemist, before I gave him anything.
I have a bottle of 'Pharma-col junior'...not sure what chemist I got it from, but it says on the bottle can be given from 7mths. It has a cough suppressant, decongestant and analgesic...so it's like giving panadol, dimetap and someting for the cough all in one dose.
I agree with taking MJ to the dr. My dr says if kids have colds and there's no improvement to go see her on the third day.
Hope she feels better soon :)

Oh I know you can buy stuff on the market but I have been told to avoid that by my Dr as it can actually cause more problems. But you said you have only given it under Dr supervision etc so that is okay too!

What sort of problems? My dr has never mentioned anything like that to me...typical of some drs these days I guess

Hi RB,
Yes I know long time no hear.
Gald to hear you are taking MJ to the doc. I'm not sure if you remember but i took Cooper to the doc when he was about 3mths as he had a rattle on his chest which the doc said was nothing to worry about and that it would clear up itself. SO i did nothing further. I took him back to a different doc last week has he had been coughing alot, not sleeping for more then 2hrs at a time, sneezing all the time and the rattle on his chest sounded worse. It turned out that he has Mucus Rales which could have turned into pneumonia overnight if i hadnt taken him to the dr when i did. He is now on Amoxil drops and is getting better.
I hope that MJ doesnt have something this severe but if your not happy with the doc's diagnosis please get a 2nd opinion cause if i did then maybe Coop wouldnt have gotten so sick.
