Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me. My husband and I have just decided to start trying for Bub #1. I have just gone off the pill after 5 year on it. I have not ovulated since coming off the pill 33 days ago. I was just wondering how long it will take for my cycle to settle down? Please Help

Hi Stacy,
I was on the pill for MUCH longer than that and when I came off it it took me 35 days to get my first period - so basically one week longer than usual. I wasn't checking for ovulation but I have heard of another friend who skipped a whole period when she first came off it.. then she conceived in the next cycle!
After my first long cycle, I had a fairly normal cycle and I assume I ovulated as normal.. except it was only 26 days, then I had a funny cycle where I couldn't tell if I ovulated, but I had a lot of symptoms that might have indicated an early, failed pregnancy (cramping, spotting etc) - again it was a 26 day cycle so I figured I was back into a routine by then. About that stage I started taking Evening Primrose Oil and a high dose of Vitamin B6 as both are supposed to assist greatly with fertility and your reproductive cycle. My next cycle was very 'normal' again, I definitely ovulated around day 15-17 and it was a 28 day cycle..
As a rule of thumb, I have heard that you are very fertile when first coming off the pill. .then it can take up to 3 months to get back to normal (for some people - naturally everyone's different).
sorry for all the boring detail, but I hope that helps!
Cheers,
Cosmic.

I was on the pill for about 10 years when I went off it. It took 3 months to get back to a 28 day cycle then I fell pregnant  I think it just depends honestly. We were so shocked at how easy and quickly it happened.
Good luck with everything :)

Hello,
My doc told me when i was going to start tring again that it can take
up to 3 months for you to be fertile again. :o

Yes, my doctor told me the same, Ellymayone! That must be the standard rule I think. It was only later I heard of a whole bunch of people who fell pregnant straight off the pill and some others on here have even posted that their doc told them to come off the pill when they are ready to fall pregnant because it is highly likely in the first month!!
That makes me curse the fact that I came off the pill when DH was overseas! So I figure if you miss the first magic month, then it can be up to 3 mths to get back to 'normal'. That certainly seems to be what has happened with me.
cheers. :)

Thank-you all for your help. The pointers you have all put forward are a great help for a very excited first timer! :D I tested on Wednesday and a BFN. Tomorrow will be exactly one week past 28days so if nothing then I might test again. Do you think that I am jumping the gun a bit?

hi Stacy,
do you mean testing for pregnancy?? But didn't you say you didn't ovulate? I'm confused. :o
What makes you think you didn't ovulate?

Hi Cosmic,
Sorry i didn't explain it well. I stopped taking the pill after my last period on the 20th of June. Since then I have not seen AF. Tomorrow will be 35days. I don't know if I ovulated or not. Only new to this game. :o . Should I test tomorrow, wait, or see my doctor?

Gotcha! ;)
If I were you I'd put this down to normal coming off the pill stuff and wait a while.. even another week or so.. if AF hasn't turned up by then, perhaps take a test, but it isn't unusual to have a long cycle after the pill (in my experience and the experience of others I know).
It's hard to say since you don't have any other way to tell when you might have ovulated, but if it was negative at day 33 I'd say it's negative unless you potentially had a really late O date..?
It will sort itself out soon enough. When you start the next cycle, check out www.fertilityfriend.com for charting things like temperature and cervical mucus to be able to see exactly when you ovulate. Or a great book is 'Taking Charge of Your Fertiility' by Toni Weschler... but at this early stage the FF website should give you all you need to know.
Cheers,
C.

Hi Cosmic,
Well my husband and I went away for the weekend and low and behold AF turned up on Friday night. What a way to wreck a weekend. Anyway now I can officially start counting my days a again. We have decided to just let nature take its course and not even think about it until September/october. If nothing has happened by then I will start tracking my cycle and calculating when I am most fertile.
Anyway Good luck to you. Hope I see you in the expecting section soon.

Hi Stacy,
Couldn't help but notice you were from "South Burnett". I live in Gin Gin, are you nearby?

Hi Stacy... good to know what's going on at least!! And good to hear you are going to give it a couple of months before getting actively involved in the process. Turns out to be a successful strategy for most people! ;)

Hi Shereejoy,
I live around Kingaroy so a little ways off. But you are the closest person I have met so why don't we chat through email!!!
Hi Cosmic,
I supose there is a positive side to everything. I was a little bit puzzled about AF as she only stuck around for two days and was off again. I thought that there may be a chance it was implantation bleeding. I did a test yesterday and BFN. so I take that as a no and will just sit tight for a couple of months. October is a better time for us to concieve because both of our birthdays are in March so we should probably spread them out a little bit if possible.
Hope everything is going well for you both.

Hi Stacy, That is weird. Since I came off the pill, my period is only 3 days so it can be different but 2 days seems very short. Was it lighter than usual?
