I have just started my 8 week old on Soy formula as I felt he may have milk allergy and thought I would give it ago as suggested by others.

It was suggested to get S26 Lactose Free but for some reason (maybe lack of sleep) i grabbed the Soy S26 Formula.

Bub was previuosly constipated which i know goes against the theory of a milk allergy but now since having the Soy he has had diahorrea during every feed. Now i dont know if this is a bad thing as bub is very happy doing the biggest smiles, sleeping more, not as much gas, vomiting and upset belly and just all round seems better.

But then I read about the dangers of soy with infertility with males etc.

Is there a serious risk?

Should I change to the lactose free S26?

Also this would be about the 4th Formula I have tried. Is it ok to keep changing?

I researched soy for my kids (they can't have dairy) and really didn't like what I was reading, so have found alternatives.

Besides anything else, soy has a very similar protein structure to dairy, and betwen 30 - 80% of children who can't tolerate dairy proteins won't be able to tolerate soy either. Diarrhoea would be suggestive that his body isn't coping well with the soy, so I'd be wary about continuing.

Having said that, I don't know a great deal about formula as I've never used it....I hope you find a good solution for your bubba.

hi hf83,

Not an expert but ill share a little of my story and some info my be some help.
My ds 2 has a milk allergy and he was severly constipated. So symptons can vary ped told me.
In regards to soy formula, that is great that he is happy on it. I know what you mean by being worried as i have heard lots different storys. My natropath said to me dont touch it but then i asked the doc and ped and they said nothing wrong with it we recommend this all the time...... depends who you listen to.
My ds is on elecare a prescription formula and he now has watery poos but i have been told by ped that this is normal. Maybe if he still loose talk to your gp and see what they say.
I would just do what you think is right.
Cheers

Well if you google it there is loads of info to find.

As Tam said usually whilst its often trialled by many Paeds they tend to steer clear of it when a child has issues with cows milk as their protien structures are similar ...

My issues lay with the phyotoestrogens though because they seem to cause a problem for boys & whilst it doesnt seem to be a huge issue its enough of one for me to take notice.

I have twins, one is on Elecare and the other one S26 LF formula.
As somebody mentioned babies can have different symtoms as mine did.
I would get a referal to a paed and have a talk to them. I know my paed really didn't like soy and he did give me a couple of reasons.
If you do need to go onto a different formula like Elecare its best to do it straight away as a lot of babies don't like the taste of it. My son will drink it not a problem but there was no way my daughter would. In the end she was lactose intol, not dairy so she could have the S26 LF.

Hi i have a son who is Lactose Intolerant (secondary from 3 weeks old) he is on the Karicare De-Lact.

I know how worrying it is when a baby is unsettled and having strange poo's.

But to be honest the best thing to do, is what the other people have said, speak to your Ped, Gp or MCHN. If ur worried even give the 24 hr MCH line a call.

Let them suggest to you what to do, and even get a few professional opinions.

Swapping formula's isnt a bad thing, but it can sometimes make it harder to find the cause of the allergy/reaction, so i would get so pro-fes advice before switching again, at least with this one you know what its going through him, and so long as he is putting on weight and is content, that is a great start.

I hope you find an answer soon :fingerscrossed:
