View Full Version : When did you start using sleeping bags/stop wrapping baby?
My DS is 4 weeks old, and it's so cold, I would love to start using sleeping bags on him, but I'm not sure if that's too early to stop wrapping him?
I know they feel safe and secure with the wrap, but he's a wriggler!
When did you stop wrapping your babies?

My DS is almost 5 months & i still wrap him really tight every night, just like i did when he was a newborn  its the only way he sleeps ok at night. Im scared im going to end up have a 2 year old that still needs to be wrapped
Hi
I started weaning my DS at about 7 weeks. I started with leaving his arms out when i wrapped him during the day. To get in used to that first then he graduated to a gro bag. I was lucky that he took to it well coz as the PP said some babies love being wraped for longer.
My DS was a wriggler too and I used the Kiddopotumus wrap from toys r Us. He diddnt often get out of that. he wasbron in the hat of summer so I got th ethin one but when it was cool I would wrap a blacket around it to keep him warm

DS is 6 months and still gets wrapped! and he has a sleeping bag underneath - it's his comfort and sleeping aid. in the day he goes down without being wrapped.

I didn' stop wrapping DS until he was 5 months and after I didn't really use sleeping bags, maybe during the winters but he didn't really like them.

My sleeping bags are size 00 & 0, so maybe at a month or 2?? They were both wrigglers too, and they would always come out of their wrap, so I bought more mittens and some sleeping bags, and didn't look back and I feel they slept better.

DS2 gets wrapped in a sheet over the top of his sleeping bag.. i was hoping this would make the transition easy from being wrapped to not wrapped.. he is 6 months now and won't fall asleep without being wrapped

If your bub sleeps unswaddled the I say go for it. We stopped swaddling dd around 10wks during the day, but she was still swaddled in her miracle blanket until around 6.5mths
I think it all depends on the bub. DS loved being wrapped and we wrapped him until he starting rolling over in the cot (4 months ish???). DD is another story. At 2 weeks old we decided she didn't like being wrapped (wriggling, squirming, grunting and worst of all, not really sleeping!). We transferred her into a sleeping bag and she was immediately heaps better (especially at night).

Ds slept with a wrap over his sleeping bag from about 3 months to about 6 months when he stopped wanting to be wrapped. So you can do both if needed.
DD was in a sleeping bag from 8 weeks. We only wrapped her arms as she was a wriggler. From 13 or 14 weeks we started only wrapping one arm. And at around 16 weeks we stopped wrapping her altogether.

We started using Grobags at 8 weeks and our little man started sleeping through the night!
He hated being wrapped from about 6 weeks but we persisted for the extra couple while we got the Grobags.

same as what Teenie said, All babies are different , some will NEED to be wrapped up tight for a long time, others not. We had problems weaning from the swaddle as it's the only way our baby would sleep, but once they start escaping all the contraptions.. sleep went downhill. We got a sleep sack that helps the transition called a Peke Moe and it worked well for us. Probably as it has the arms inside the sleeping bag? but they can still move. good luck :)
We wrapped our ds til nearly 12 months. The trick with wriggly babies is to use strong cotton material (flat cot sheet is fine) that is BIG so it can be well tucked under the bub on the side before the final wrap. The wraps from shops are often far too small - must be at least 1m square, but that won't work for a child over 6 months.
Then, my ds used sleeping bags from 12 months til a few weeks ago - he's 2 and a half next week. He's now in 'sleep suits' - fleece all in one's that keep him warm.

I don't think I'll wrap my second past 4 - 6 weeks. DS at times liekd being wrapped, at others absolutely cracked it. We finally stopped when he got a cold and he wanted to be able to pull out his dummy and put it back in :hair:
He was also a very strong little bugger, I couldn't wrap him from about 4 months, even using a single bed sheet... DF had to wrap him in the most complicated way I've seen yet to keep him in
we have just gone cold turkey 2 days ago at 4.5 mths and it is going really well.
DS started to really toss and turn and struggle when he stirred so I thought it was time to give it a go.
However, he really really needed to be wrapped to sleep at all until very recently. Previous attempts at unwrapping had been entirely unsuccessful.
Seems like once he started sleeping better himself he was ready to be unwrapped. I tried the wrap over the sleeping bag but that didn't work for us so it was cold turkey.
