I have to return to work shortly, 3 days a fortnight, possibly 4 and my DS will only be 4 1/2 months old at this time. I'm concerned about being able to provide enough expressed breast milk to leave for him in the fortnight whilst i'm at work. I'm allowed two 1/2 hour lactation breaks for an 8 hour shift and i travel about an hour each way.
My plan is to breastfeed him his first and last feeds during the day with EBM in between. I will be working every wednesday and every 2nd saturday, and later on, every second friday; i won't work two days in a row cos i'm concerned about the lack of infant stimulation by breasts will receive. I have a medela swing breastpump which i love but am considering getting the pump in style advanced double pump to be able to ensure i empty both breasts in my allotted lactation breaks. Questions:
1) has anyone else successfully combined work and breastfeeding when their bubs were under 6months and solely on breastmilk?
2) any estimation on how much milk i should leave for him without wastage? (he is 13 wks now, is 5.1kg and has 7 feeds in 24hrs wth 5 during the day)
3) i'm a good expresser and can get 20-30mls out after each feed. Will i be able to express enough EBM over the fortnight to leave for him without havig to dip into my 'frozen milk bank'?

TIA jasmine

You will do fine. Especially since you are breastfeeding most of the time. I would leave the milk in 100ml lots, so none gets wasted. I used to freeze mine in ice cubes so that if they needed more, they could get another cube or two instead of a whole bottle. Half an hour should be more than enough time to do both sides with the swing. I have the pump in style double, it is awesome, but expensive.

My kids would often have around 150ml per missed feed. So if you will be away for 3 feeds, I would leave around 450ml of milk.

opinionated: i was intending to leave 150mls per feed so 450mls total and to give daycare lady some frozen EBM ice cubes and bags just in case DS needs more.
how quickly do you manage to empty both breasts with the pump instyle advanced? its just that 3 wks ago i did a senior 1st aid course and could only express once for 1/2 hour. i fed DS at 7, expressed at 1230, then fed DS again at 1715 and then back to normal breastfeeds. When i expressd i felt as though i didn't empty them both enough and as though i needed 20mins each breast. i then got mastitis at the end of the week. I used the swing pump.
I'm thinking of doing a 'dummy run' one saturday when my DH is home. This will involve me breastfeeding at 6am then expressing at 10am and 2 pm and then breastfeeding again anywhere from 6pm onwards. Whilst at work i'll only the two half hours in which to express, eat and go to the toilet. I'll see how much i get out with the swing and if i can empty them properly in half an hour. If i can't then i'll consider getting the pump in style.
Is the mini electric double any good?
